Should the server consider an update?

Should we update the server? (This is a petition)

  • Yes. This will do more good than harm.

  • No. Too much staff loss, conflict, etc.

Without a doubt, there has been a serious debate since LAST YEAR about updating the server. Here are the straight facts:

Pros:
- Less lag. Most of the lag is caused by compatibility issues when on creative. (The less lag, the less restarts)
- New minigame opportunities! Most new plugins nowadays are built for servers leaning more towards the newer blocks and items.
- Creative gets colorized! New blocks means new builds, and end rods are pretty, are they not?
- Intuitive combat that requires thinking. Self explanatory.
- Creative expansion. (most likely). With more plots, more can be done, and perhaps everyone can double the amount of owned plots. Take that into consideration.

Cons:
- Not everyone can handle 1.9. Some computers will fry in newer updates thanks to Microsoft's involvement.
- Some staff will be potentially lost! Going back to the frying computers thing, this applies to staff as well. Perhaps the saying of "sacrifice for success" really IS true.
- Bugs. The new combat system could potentially mess with current plugins, but not so badly as to be game-breaking.

So compare these facts and make your decisions below. This is YOUR server as the community, and YOU make the choices!

I mean, the proposed changes are incredible leaps, and given the current state of the player-base of PZ, I'm not sure if they are willing to give up more players, especially before they can gain more.

Just as a point of interest, moving to 1.9 or above could potentially lose us upto 30% of the current playerbase and from what I can see half the current moderation team. Until people start using the higher versions we can't really alienate them.

What about the 70% who want to use the new features of 1.9+? It's been almost a year and a half since 1.9 was released, and people still cling to 1.8. If their computers aren't fast enough, I'd recommend installing optifine. It really helps.

Regarding the statement about PZ's player base - what better way to draw more players in than to advertise new features and games? If we stay with our 1.8 mechanics and jitterclick PvP, I don't think we're going to draw a lot of new people in.

I don't think you should assume people are just going to "start using higher versions." If they've stuck to 1.8 for this long, they probably aren't going to move anytime soon unless we do.

I'm not very active on the PZ server, so obviously I don't have much authority or reason to speak on this. I'm just throwing ideas out.

Players will make an effort to update whenever their favorite servers do. We don't hold the kind of influence as we're quite small so it'd be too risky for us to start the change, but rather you'd have to look at one of the huge networks to switch. We're held back by others not updating so unless we want to restrict a third of our (already low) playerbase from coming on this won't be possible for the foreseeable future.

We're not in any position to lose players by updating to a higher version, but we CAN work with 1.8 and aim to succeed with it through new games and content in Summer that'll bring in youtubers and therefore players.

That makes a lot of sense, actually.

When massacre was a thing PZ averaged 1000 players daily just saying.

i thought it was lmao everyone played it.
Everyone played it for the first week just because it was a new game. Same with literally every other new release that happened, such as Downgrade, Ditto, and Freeze Tag. After a week, nobody really cared anymore as they only wanted to experience something new.

Anyways, as far as upgrading the server, it seems like milking 1.8.9 up until it's completely dead and gone is the best option. Most people play on 1.8 - 1.10 clients, and most servers tend to support that. Any lower versions than that are popular just because of mod packs. For example, Pixelmon and Technic. Since 1.11+ is fairly new, there aren't as many plugins to support it yet either.
Although I'm sure as time goes on, more and more people will be making the transition to higher versions as 1.8 becomes old and vastly outdated, but pretty much everyone seems content for now (As far as the 'vanilla' player base.) It's way too early right now to even consider a version update.

I kinda' have to agree with this. 70% of the server runs up to 1.9 AT LEAST, and 60% of them have 1.12. An update really would do some good and ATTRACT popularity in the long run because of the new blocks available.

We're in no position to leave behind a third of our already dwindling playerbase. This won't happen until someone else updates.

EDIT: We'd also have to update our entire codebase to support 1.12 instead and that'd take forever when our players would much prefer new content than having to update their clients to a version that their computer may not be able to run (a situation where many of our staff and players are both in).

First of all 2/3 of the player base would be 66.666666666% not 70% JS, secondly, personally I agree that losing all those players is something that PZ really needs to avoid atm, and I like 1.8 because of the glass panes, Sorry.

dont bring up jitterclick pvp please. there are no games that are based off pvp... please just dont.

i know PZ is smaller than other big servers, and that is why i am agreeing that losing literally 33% of your player count is not acceptable. i could play pz with whatever, i personally prefer 1.8 but i could use 1.9, 1.10, 1.17 when it comes out it doesnt matter. so im trying to deliver this message from a defendants POV. you guys arent worried about this because you arent the ones that it will affect negatively. i say we stay 1.8 until there comes an easier solution or an easier time for when a higher version can be accepted widely on the server.

So far in my account, my computer doesn't like me using 1.9 / 1.9 - latest version. Meaning if we updated we'd lose a lot of players, like Morphic said

Do you not go on the server, or have you just not noticed the fact that Downgrade exists?

I agree with you that we can't really afford to lose 30% of our players, but I don't really think that ALL of the 1.8 users are unable to update. I know there are some people who are just salty that Mojang improved the combat system. That doesn't fix our issue of losing some of our playerbase, so you're right on that part.

Downgrade is a one hit kill almost the entire time. The only time pvp actually becomes a thing is when the top players in the game get to their last lives or life. How is that a PvP based game. And with all the other one hit kills on you while you're trying to "jitterclick PvP"... how...?

Have you forgotten PvP means Player vs. Player? Despite the abilities the weapons have, it's still using melee combat.

I keep saying we shouldn't delete some of our playerbase. There are pros and cons to both sides of this.
