Cynthia Scar’s Backstory:
“Sorry Cynth.” Cynthia’s brother’s last words were. She took one last look at her elder brother. “Don’t be sorry, I’m the one leaving.” she mumbled back before leaving, knowing she could become infected if she spent any longer in the house she had grown up in. She stepped outside of the building then turned back around to face its front, pausing. After a few moments of deeply inhaling and exhaling, she ran off as she already felt dizzy - one of the symptoms of The Lag. A few hours passed before she reached the centre of her town, having still not found a shelter that was clear of frozen people. “Hello?” she called out, standing still. “Is anybody out there?” Suddenly, someone stepped out from behind a bush, his face was covered by a metal mask, his hair scruffy and brown. He peered at the seven year old child and held his hand out. “Come with me,” he said, “Allow me to take you somewhere safe.” Cynthia studied him for a moment and her mind was screaming Stranger danger! Stranger danger! Turn back now and run! Stranger danger! “Who are you?” she asked after a moment of considering. “Your assistant, of course. I’m just here to help you.”
“Uhm… ok! Show me where you’ll take me then!” She demanded.
“Follow me then, child.” He gestured, beginning to walk back through the bush. Upon reaching the shelter Cynthia looked at the outside. “So, what do you think?” The man asked her. She stared at the building, confused. “This looks like a prison,” She turned to him. “Why is that?”
“Don’t worry it’s a Safety Zone, it’s not a prison. This was the quickest thing the government could build.”
“What does the Safety Zone do for us to make it safe?”
“Hmm.” The man went silent. “I shouldn’t be telling you this until you’re in your room but, I suppose you can keep a secret. Can you?” The eager girl nodded. “Good. The Safety Zone is a place where children can be sent or brought to. The Safety Zone monitors your every move so we can make sure that you aren’t infected if an outbreak of The Lag gets in.”
“Are we… Are we allowed to leave whenever we want?” Cynthia asked slowly, turning her head back to the Safety Zone. “I’m afraid not. But remember, it's for your own good.”
“Hm.” She said, turning back to glare at him as his gaze changed to the building. She threw her right fist at his face then ran off, yelling, “That, my friend is kidnapping!"
Wolfia’s Backstory:
“Right, gather round, children and teenagers!” A mysterious woman stepped into the room and shouted. She was dressed in a black tuxedo and grey sunglasses. “Today, you’re going to be moved to another place. We’ve ran checks on this orphanage and we’re afraid it’s not protected against The Lag.” Wolfia stood in a shadow in the corner, glaring at the woman. “I’m fairly sure that nowhere is safe from The Lag.” They said, slightly agitated that they’d have to leave where they’ve grown up for years, especially when they'd only just returned from Spain. “Ah, Wolfia, was it?” She said, walking over and putting on a fake smile. Wolfia remained silent. “We’ve made a Safety Zone; The Lag cannot get in there. Just come with us and we can show you your safe-haven.” After a few hours, all the orphans were sitting inside of a van, on the way to the Zone, fully content. Wolfia however was still skeptical. “So, Wolfia. How were your studies in Spain?” A boy next to Wolfia asked, they couldn’t remember his name since it had been three years. They looked at him slowly. “Why do you care?”
“We’re friends, aren’t we?”
“Since when?”
“Uh…”
“Now leave me alone!” They snapped, turning their body away. Abruptly, the car screeched to a halt. “We’re here. Now get out the car!” The woman driving shouted. Obediently, the children and teenagers leaped out of the vehicle and looked around then to the massive stone square. “Is that… Is that where we’re going to be living?” One of the younger children asked. The woman nodded and smiled, before walking into the entrance. Wolfia reluctantly followed, it would be stupid to run now since this place was heavily guarded, for an unknown reason.
Raya’s Backstory:
“Farewell, Saskya, Mother, Father.” Raya said, tears in her eyes, as she left her home. Oh no, oh no, oh no! What do I do? Where do I go? What if The Lag catches me? Her mind was racing with problems and her breathing and heartbeat were rapid. “Calm down, Raya. You’ll be fine!” She muttered, attempting to reassure herself. Wait catches? I mean infects… Raya carried on walking, despite the panic she was feeling, for around an hour. “Are you alright, miss?” An elderly man called over to her from across the road. Before replying, Raya noticed that the left half of his body was completely frozen. The man realized she was inspecting him then he laughed and said, “Yes – before you ask – I’m infected with The Lag.” He gave a small smile. “Sad yes, but I’m ready for it now. I’d have to go sooner or later, either way.”
“Wait, why are people still walking around when there are people infected here? Wouldn’t they be worried about getting lagged?”
“Yes, but those people are working in there,” He pointed behind him to a large building. “That, there, is a Safety Zone, made by the government, to protect children and teenagers from The Lag. I can take you there if you like.”
“Is it safe?”
“Yes, as far as I am aware.”
“Take me please.”
“Gladly!” He began to walk off, every few steps he would look over his shoulder to check she was following.
Lavender Clahol’s Backstory
“Are you sure it’s a good idea? It’s in England and I’m here.” Lavie asked the woman as they curled up beneath a blanket together.
“Of course, Lav. It’s safe and,” The woman let out a violent cough then turned back to the girl. “Besides, I’ll be infected soon so you’d best be on your way. Here,” She dipped her hand in her pocket and pulled out a few dollars. “It’s all I have”
“Swear you won’t tell my family that I’ve left New Jersey?”
“Of course.”
“Thank you so much, Louise,” Lavender replied, leaning into the woman’s shoulder. “I won’t forget you, ever. I’ll come back one day!”
“Shush child. Now, go before it’s too late.” Lavender stood up after giving a hug to Louise then she rushed off to the airport. She ran through the automatic doors then slammed into the desk. “Woah! Someone’s in a rush!” The man at the desk exclaimed, leaping out of his chair in surprise. “Sorry, can I have a plane ticket to Southern England?”
“Uh, we can give you a ticket to London, but it costs four hundred dollars.”
“I… only have five dollars.” The man thought for a moment then said, “Where are your parents?” Knowing that the police would be called if she didn’t lie, she bluffed, “They um… Passed away.”
“Oh my, I’m so sorry. But why would you try and move to London because they’re not around, anymore?”
“Relatives.”
“Oh, ok. Hmm.” He looked down at his computer, typed something, then handed her a piece of paper. “Here you go, it’s the least I can do. Your plane is departing in two minutes so you’ll need to run.”
“Thanks.”
