Prompt: Love At First Sight + A World without Love
Link:
Cold February air sent delicate shivers down her spine as they rushed into her warmth house, her pale hand tightly laced with his.

“Let’s just go into the living room,” She muttered, her hands chilled with cool air.

She looked up at him, waiting for his approval with a red tipped nose. He nodded silently, stifling a small chuckle at her tiny frame. She looked up at him again nervously, guiding him into the dim-light living space. A large television was placed on top of a black stand, a coffee table separating two couches. They sat on the longer couch, creating a small distance between one another.

“Music?” She asks, fumbling her thumbs in her lap. The warm hum of the heater in the corner provided little peace in the silence that coated the room. He nodded to her, his eyes sparkling as he scanned over her crooked, shy smile. She turned from him briefly before retrieving the speaker from the table, plugging her phone in and softly pressing play. They stared at each other for a moment, gazing knowingly into one another’s eyes, his laced with colors of the summer sky, dotted and the lightest shade of blue. Hers were an emerald hue, brown sprouting from the soft center around her brown pupils. But nothing could imitate this moment, but when she glanced at him, they widen to take in each other. Before they said a word the laid side by side. It was a tight squeeze, but they both cuddled one another, her giving in to his warmth. No words were spoken, and she nervously fiddled with her hands again. He once more softly laughed at her, watching her pale cheeks rush with a red tint. With the tip of her head, she looked at him. Her eyes held a secret, one he already knew. He stared down at her already and in a moment of pure bliss, their lips reunited again, like pieces of a puzzle molding together perfectly. They lay there, staring, kissing, remembering. When had it been this easy, to fall in love with the same person, in a world where it was not allowed. Yes, the secret in her eyes was love. It was not fair to any other, their love. But something lay underneath the emotion. Pure fear struck both of them, fear of drying up the ocean of love surrounding their peaceful love. But in this moment neither of them worried.

It was just them.

Alone.

Together.

But as the tide goes in and out,

the ocean turns to a lake.

As the sun and moon takes turns dominating the skylines,

the lake turns into a puddle.

And what they feared all along…..

was happening.

Falling in love at first sight,

Where falling in love was not allowed.

Prompt: Love at first Sight
Story:
Oh. My. Gosh. Why does she have to be so obnoxious?! My twin sister, Layla, stands next to my crush. The one she knows I've had since second grade. I remember her leaning down from her bed, which was the upper bunk of our small bunk bed, hanging her arms hung down by her upside-down head and saying, 'You are so hard-headed, Lily. He's totally not gonna care if you ask him out because, like, a million other girls ask him out every day,'' every day of the latter half of third grade. In fifth grade, she finally stopped being so malicious, or so I thought, and told me that she used to have a crush on him too. Then we were friends for a while, up until this year, our Sophomore year of high school. Last week, in a game of truth or dare with some friends, we had to confess a secret plan for the future. You can probably guess what mine was. I was going to ask out Adrian. The guy Layla's probably asking out now. She smiles sweetly at him and turns around, facing away from him, so that I can see her face from where I'm sulking at my desk. As she walks away from him, she smirks at me, then gives me a mock smile and winks.
I've never been the type of girl to confront someone, but, right now, in this hideous moment, I would shout at my sister from across this classroom. You probably noticed that I said 'would''. I won't confront her now because Adrian is still in the room. Instead, I try to shrink more than I already have.

Back at our house, I work up the nerve to do something more to my sister than give her nasty looks behind her back. Along with the,'You are so hard-headed, Lily,' stuff, she would also tell me that if I thought that Adrian was "the one" that I should save my love for him. When I was seven years old, I probably thought that I was in love and that he was "the one" or whatever. It might be a little too late to realize this, but I've been keeping any other emotions about anyone else away from myself because I've been trying to keep all my love for Adrian.
While I've been contemplating all this, Layla hopped in the shower. I'm gonna have to wait at least thirty minutes until I see her again. Showers don't even take that long! I decide it's best to do my homework in the time that Layla gave me before I burst a blood vessel at her.
When Layla finally gets out of the shower, I've finished all my homework. Either she took longer in the shower because she knew what was coming for her or I'm just dashing through my homework to get to her.
"Hey. Layla. Let's chat." I cringe at myself. What is this, a movie?
Suddenly, I'm regretting this. I love my sister. We're best friends that were made for each other, whether we like it or not.
I shake my head. She's been building up to this moment for years now because of her actions. She's been asking for it, practically.
"Oh. 'Kay," she says nonchalantly, which works me up even more.
"You know that I've always been in love with him." She knows who I'm talking about.
I decide to speed up my speech before she can come up with some snarky comment.
"You told me not to get carried away with anyone else. You knew that I was immature and gullible." I scoff. "You've been setting me up for this very day for eight years. I know what you think of yourself. You think you're all that, and that you're the most intelligent mind in the small world you live in. I'm done with you, Layla."
She opens her mouth with a distasteful look on her face. I almost prepare to defend myself from one of her snarky comments until I realize that nothing is coming out of her mouth. Yet. I quickly come up with something intimidating to say that will give me a good exit, one that'll leave her there with her mouth open like a fool.
"I don't think you heard me. I'm done." I hiss the last word in her face and saunter away like nothing happened.
I think I just broke up with my twin.
I smirk just like she did earlier today. It makes me feel so accomplished. Mission successful.

The next day, I get up earlier than Layla. She is just barely opening her eyes as I walk out the door with a sassy expression on my face and in my walk. I catch an early public bus and get to school. I roll my eyes with a smile as I think about how ready she must be for school right now. Putting on her slippers? Eating breakfast?
My stomach growls as I realize that I haven't eaten anything. Luckily, there's a small grocery store near the school. Adrian probably isn't even at school yet, which gives me more time to prepare myself for the possible outcomes of my new mission.
I enter the grocery store, which is covered in cute little hearts. I realize something for the second time this morning. It's Valentine's Day! Perfect!
I scarf down the small breakfast sandwich I bought at the store as the cashier scans my items groggily. I smile widely at her and it seems to brighten her whole day. She waves at me as I make my way out of the store. I check my watch. It reads 8:47. Great. I know that Adrian arrives at school at 9:00. Thinking about everything I know about Adrian, my walk slows down a bit. Do I really like him? Is this true love? I come to a full stop and frown at the ground, deep in thought.
Yes. I will--
Footsteps pass by me and I jump, suddenly focused back on what is happening around me.
"Hey, Lily!"
Adrian.
I feel my cheeks get hot.
As he passes by me, he slows a bit, but doesn't stop, as if he had something else to say to me but chickened out.
I will not chicken out.
"Uh.. Adrian?"
I become super-paranoid as I see him stop in front of me, a joyous smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. I hope he's not disgusted by me. After all, I am transgender. Well, if he's disgusted by me, he's not worth my love.
"I.. Uh. Well," I laugh at myself a bit.
I will not chicken out.
Go all out or don't go at all.
"I've liked you since second grade but I've never worked up any nerves to tell you. I really hope you feel the same way. I-I.. I got you these!"
I thrust out my hand towards him, holding the chocolate covered cherries and marshmallows that I got at the grocery store. I realize that I was talking very abruptly. I sigh to myself in my head. First impressions are key, Lily, and this is probably his first impression of you.
When he doesn't respond, I stare at the ground, eyes wide. I can't bring myself to look at his face. I've spent full class periods memorizing details about him, but I am so scared to look up at his face now.
After an awkward thirty seconds, I glance up for a millisecond and almost say, "Well, I guess I'll see you later. Or maybe not," until I see his face. His cheeks are scarlet, his mouth slightly open, his eyes twinkling and smiling even though his mouth isn't.
"Me too, except I've liked you since first grade," he whispers.
We then pull each other into a hug that somehow turned into a kiss.
Cars speed past us, the wind ruffles our hair and turns our cheeks red, leaves dance around us, but we don't let go.
As if we've both been waiting for this perfect, beautiful moment.

Prompt: A tragic breakup ( i hope ! )

Link:
‘’Max!~”

Max let out a huff as he felt a pair of feet land on him and knock him over. His fingers were cold, and Finn winces as the older’s fingers curl around his ankle, yanking the younger away.

Max huffed, bending over to pick himself up. He’d dust the dirt off of his black jeans and he looked back up at Finn, his eyes are bloodshot. ‘’What do you what?”

Finn smiles, his smile as bright as the sun, his grin is too wide, too enthusiastic for Max to handle. ’’I want to keep you company!”

Max rolled his eyes, he’d sit himself back down on the couch. Finn would sit beside him and rest his head on his chest, when Max looks up with a scowl, all Finn does is grin sleepily, his eyes were falling shut. He cuddled closer to Max. His hair fell over his eyes.

Finn began letting out soft huffs, his breath fell slower. Max got a blanket and put it over the younger.

‘’You’re so cold.’’ Max would scold Finn.

Finn would ignore Max as her shivers slightly, snuggling with the blanket around him. ‘’I love you, Max.’’ he mumbled, half asleep.

Max doesn’t stress, he moved Finn’s hair out of his eyes. ‘’I know.’’ he’d answer.

When Finn kisses Max, it throws Max off his equilibrium, each and every time, even though they were dating. Well, kind of dating.

Max sighs, shaking hair from his eyes. He quickly stands back up after getting dressed. ‘’You got any plans for today?”

‘’I might go swimming, maybe. I don’t know, Eoin and Cian invited me.’’

‘’Swimming?” Max frowns.

‘’Yeah, that thing you do in the water?”

Max looks back at Finn, throwing him an ugly look. ‘’I know what swimming is.’’ he licked his lips. ‘’But you’re going with Eoin? You know he likes you, right?

Finn hummed, avoiding Max’s eyes. He lifted his shoulders and shrugged. ‘’I know.’’ he was shivering from the cold.

‘’You know?”

''Well, yeah,’’ His cheeks were red, ‘’but it doesn’t matter because I don’t like him’’ he smiled.

Finn continued to shiver, ‘’Finn, can you stop shivering and take a blanket or something?” He threw a blanket to him, he pulled it up to his chin and looked at Max with wide eyes. Max wondered what it would be like if Finn did go with Eoin,

if Max loses Finn to Eoin, it might just be for the best, for Finn anyway. Max thought.

‘’Maybe you should give him a chance!’’ Max mentions whilst shrugging on a coat.

‘’I don’t want to give him a chance.’’ Finn frowns.

‘’Why not? He seems nice.’’ He looked for his keys.

‘’Because I love you!” He used the ''Duh’’ tone of voice.

Max stares at Finn, he’s heard it before so what’s wrong? His breath catches in his throat and tingles go up his spine. He tried to say it. He tried to force it out. I love you too. But he can’t. He doesn’t know if those words are true, so all he can manage to say is ‘’I…’’

Finn let out a sigh, ‘’It’s ok, Max.’’ His lips begin to form a straight line. ''See you later.’’

A lot of months before Finn started telling Max he loved him, and before they were dating-half dating. Max met a boy who made his world tilt. His name was Sean, he had a petty smile and bright eyes, and when he kissed Max, Max kissed him back.

‘’I think Finn likes you,’’ Sean whispered to Max as he walked back into the room. He brought himself and Sean a bottle of water, but he didn’t bring Finn anything.

‘’Likes me? Max questioned. He hat back on the sofa, looking over at Finn. ‘’I don’t think so,’’ Max says as Finn turned around, knowing Max was staring at him.

‘’He doesn’t like me.’’ He loves me.

‘’Hmm,’’ Sean chuckled, drinking the water Max brought in. ‘’It sure looks like it sometimes.’’ Sean frowned. ‘’I don’t want to get in the way of anything.’’

Max played with Sean’s hair before quickly giving him a peck. ‘’Don’t worry, me and Finn aren’t anything.’’

Sean smiled, cuddling into Max, not knowing that Max is lying, just a bit. Just a little bit.

‘’Are you ashamed of us?” Finn asked Max the moment Sean leaves.

‘’Ashamed of what?”

‘’Us, are you ashamed of us?” He repeats. ‘’Or I mean, ashamed of what we had?”

Max began to shake his head as he suddenly realised what was happening. ‘’Don’t read into things too much, Finn. You know what we had. Don’t make it something it wasn’t.’’

Finn narrowed his eyes at him. ‘’I can tell Sean.’’

Max shrugged, ‘’Do then, tell him.’’

‘’What does he have that I don’t?” He snapped.

Max began to get annoyed at the younger boy, slamming down the bottle he had in his hand. ‘’Finn,’’ he warned, ‘’drop it.’’

‘’No,’’ he snapped. He walked up to Max. ‘’What’s so good about him, you told me ages ago you don’t do relationships so why him, Max? What does he have?”

“He’s good and pure and nice and he’s everything I’m not’’ Max forced out. ‘’Now, drop it.’’

Finn’s eyes were lost, he was lost. ‘’I was good and pure too.’’

Max felt guilt after hearing those words, he knew what Finn was feeling, he got so sensitive over the slightest things. ‘’Finn, I didn’t mean it like-‘’

Finn smiled a smile, it was a fake smile. ‘’It’s true, I was.’’ He quietly sighed, looking down. ‘’I still love you Max, you know that, right?''

Max swallowed harshly. ‘’I know.’’

Let’s go back to the night when Finn went swimming with Eoin and Cian, it was 4 O’Clock in the morning and he still wasn’t home. Max didn’t worry about him, he knew he’d be ok, he knew he was only swimming, what’s the worst that could happen?

But at 4 O’Clock in the morning, he called Max.

Max woke up to that very phone call, he squinted at the brightness of his phone, trying to figure out who was calling him at such a time.

Finn.

Max put his phone to his ear, his voice was rough. ‘’This better be something serious, Finn.’’

‘’Eoin kissed me,’’ Finn let out a deep breath. Max thought this would’ve been a good thing, but he could hear Finn’s voice trembling ‘’Eoin kissed me and all I could think of was you!”

‘’Finn, are you ok?” Max sat up, he started to worry.

Finn let out a shaky laugh, his breath was catching up on him and he was quietly sobbing, which Max could hear. ‘’I miss us being together, Max. Will I always think of you?”

‘’Finn,’’ Max sighed, ‘’where are you? I’ll come pick you up.’’

Finn gulped. ‘’I think loving you is hard, mainly when you won’t love me back.’'

‘’Finn, where-‘’

‘’No.’’ Finn let out, forcefully. Max heard something fall to the floor in the background , but he didn’t say anything. ‘’Let me talk please, I need to tell you this.’’ He took a deep breath. ‘’I love you so much, Max. I’ve loved you since the moment I first met you. I love you since you first said hello, I love you more everyday. I love you so much it feels impossible, to care about someone as much as I care about you. I love you, and I wan’t you to be happy, but is it too much to ask for you to be happy with me? I know that you can love, you loved me before, when we were together, you say you can’t but I know for a fact you can. Before me, you fell in love with Sean, you didn’t want to have feelings for him so you cheated on him to show that you didn’t have a heart, I helped you do It too. I helped you break Sean’s heart. You knew that if you kissed me, that exact moment Sean would walk in. You knew he would catch us and there were two broken hearts that day, neither of them were yours.’’

Max has a lump is he throat, he can feel it. ‘’Finn, what happened with Sean wasn’t your fault.’’

‘’I told you to stay quiet.’’ Finn’s voice is clear now, shaky still, but determined. ‘’Please tell Sean that I’m sorry. You two would be great if you ever wanted to try again.’’

‘’I don’t want to try again, not with him anyway.’’

Finn ignored him. ‘’I thought I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you, I didn’t care how, I just wanted to be with you so much. I hurt so many people, I even pushed Eoin away. Eoin told me he loved me, before he kissed me. I was waiting to hear those words for so long, but from you. I’ve grown up a lot now, Max haven’t I?” He laughed quietly. ‘’I love you Max. But I’m drowning in a sea of you and I can’t swim, will you save me?”

Max is speechless. ‘’Finn,’’

‘’Yes?”

Max took a deep breath and closed his eyes, letting out a sigh. ‘’Please, tell me where you are.’’

‘’I have to go, Max.’’

‘’Finn-‘’ He was about to scream at the younger boy, but he didn’t. ‘’Please, I have to see you.’’

‘’You’ll see me, I promise.’’ His voice was almost a whisper, it confused Max because it sounded like he was smiling.’I love you.’’

Max was going to say those words back but he can’t. He just can’t. He doesn’t know why. Coward. He’d scowled himself.

Finn laughed. ‘’I’ll see you around, Max. Love you.’’

And then,

The line drops.

The next day, when Max got the call, everything around him stopped.

Finn was dead.

He drowned himself in a swimming pool. He was found the next morning, floating at the top.

Max thought of the exact words Finn said on that phone call the night before: ‘’You’ll see me, I promise.’’

Max was asked to speak at the service, saying he was a close friend of Finn. But he couldn’t go up, he knew why Finn was really dead and it was all his fault. Max saw Finn slowly fade before his eyes, and he didn’t do anything.

Eoin was at the service, he was crying into the arms of a boy as he screamed out, ‘’I loved him, Cian!” And the other boy whispering comforting words to him.

Even Sean showed up. It had been months since Max seen him, months since Sean seen Max kissing Finn, months since Sean slammed his apartment door, screaming that he hated Max.

He walked up to Max, ‘’I’m sorry.’’ He said, his eyes were wet.

‘’People keep saying that to me,’’ Max’s voice was clear, he wasn’t crying. ‘’I really wish they wouldn’t, sorry does nothing for me.’’

Sean frowned, he looked over at the photo displayed of Finn. Finn was smiling in that picture. ‘’I know you loved him,’’ Sean said while wiping his eyes. ''He loved you too.’’

‘’I know he did.’’ Max began to get angry at Sean, at Finn, at himself.

‘’I’m sorry but I don’t know what to do.’’ He rushed his words staring Sean in the eyes, Sean was about to hug him, but he stopped him. ‘’Don’t, don’t comfort me when it’s all my fault.’’

‘’Nobody blames you, Max-‘’

‘’I blame myself.’’

Max suddenly felt like he couldn’t breathe in that room so he walked out of the room for a while.

It was’t until later that Max decided to walk up to Finn’s grave. The words on the tombstone annoyed him.

Finn Anderson, 1998-2018.

All of Finn’s life had be reduced to a dash between two numbers.

That dash didn’t talk about how Finn loved, thrived and lived.

That dash didn’t talk about how Finn would always smile for others.

That dash didn’t talk about how Finn smiled so bright that it could blind you.

Max placed down flowers, he was angry at himself for never asking Finn what his favourite flower was.

From that day onward, he always brought different flowers, hoping one day, maybe he got it right.

Max went to Finn’s grave everyday, with a different kind of flower, today it was a single sunflower.

‘’Hi Finn,’’ Max smiled. ‘’You left quite a while ago and I still miss you so much.’’ He bit his lip. ‘’I keep going back to that phone call, I should’ve saved you, I’m sorry.’’

He held back tears, blinking slowly. ‘’I shouldn’t have lied to myself Finn, I was just scared. When I broke up with you, a bit of myself broke off aswell, I didn’t deserve you to love me as much as you did, I didn’t deserve it. I’m a horrible person. I wish you’d come back, Finn. I wish I could make it right again.’’

He swept of dirt off of the tombstone, ‘’I hope they’re treating you well.’’ He trailed his fingers along Finn’s name.

‘’Bye Finn, I’ll see you tommorow. I promise.’’

Max stood up, he looked down at the sunflower, thinking about the flower he’d bring tomorrow for him.

‘’I love you too, Finn.’’

Be aware, mine's fairly long!
Even if mine does not follow the prompt, I enjoyed writing it!
Good luck to everyone participating!

Prompt - A world where love doesn't exist, but two people have fallen in love...

Story -
Where do I begin?

I'm not sure where. It all seems like chaos right now. And with all that's going on right now, I don't know if I'm ready to set my past free.

Okay. Take a deep breath, because things are about to get weird.

I guess I should start with the talking sunflower.

It was February 7th. You know what that means, don't you? It's the season of love, happiness and emotional empathy. Flowers are being thrown, kisses being blown, and it's just a happy day so couples don't moan.

Wow. That was neat. Perhaps I should be a poet.

Where was I? Oh yeah, happy happy lovey dovey, you know? I only had one, teensy, weensy issue with it.

I hated that stuff. When I saw anyone kiss anything, I ran for the nearest store and shoved my head into a paper bag. Let me tell you, they don't taste nice, but it was a LOT better than seeing, LOVE.

I'm single. Go figure.

So, about that sunflower. I was listening to music in my bedroom near my window, where I have a massive view of plain grass. Exciting, right?! I didn't think so! I usually get bored staring at green stuff for a few seconds so I downloaded a bunch of songs so I could spend all my time doing that.

Well, today decided to be a complete bully and send my Mom upstairs. "Fox, have you even stepped foot out of this house since last week?!"

"No, there's not much for a guy to do in a massive field."

"Ugh! Go get some excercise you fatty!" She literally shoved me out of the door and slammed it in my face.

Yeah, my mom. Nice person.

I was going to just lie down and listen to music, then I realised I left my phone in the house. Really frustrated, I plonked myself onto the ground next to a sunflower.

"Parents, huh?"

"Yeah, they can be quite annoying."

"I wouldn't know, my parents don't talk."

"Yeah, well, parents can - wait, who am I talking to?"

"You're talking to me, old bean." I was suddenly slapped in the face, and when I looked to the side I saw the sunflower towering over me.

Now kids, if you're ever slapped in the face by a flower, 10/10 doctors would say that you're dreaming. Unfortunately I wasn't anywhere near a pharmacy, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't dreaming, because I woke up like 2 hours ago.

So I did the obvious thing.

I screamed "MOMMY!!!!"

No reply. Did I mention she was a nice person?

"Calm down, old bean," the sunflower said, "I need to talk to you."

"Calm down? There's a sunflower who apparently has the right to slap my face and can talk!"

"Okay, I'm sorry about slapping you, but I needed your attention, yeah?"

"Fine." I rubbed my sore face. "Talk."

"One of the girls in this town were captured by the West. I know because she planted me here."

"Why was she here on my property?"

"That's not important! She planted me so I have a special empathy connection with her. She's been kidnapped and I need you to get her back."

Okay, by this point I was really confused. Apparently this plant has a line of communication to some random girl and she was kidnapped. And he (I assume the flower was a he, he had a male voice) wanted me to get her back? Listen guys, I'm not James Bond. I'm Fox de Roux, just a normal guy with a normal life, talking to an un-normal being. I'm not sure why he was asking me.

"Why are you asking me?"

"I can see the future lad."

"Whoa." Now I was intrigued. "You can see the future? So you can ask a question to yourself and the future would appear?"

"More like the future mugs me from time to time. I can't see these visions on demand, old bean. When it's really important, I can see what I need to see. My vision told me that you were the one to free my planter."

"Fine." I shrugged. "What's the girl's name?"

"I don't know."

"You don't know? That's like saying you don't know your own mother's name!" I exclaimed.

He slapped me again. "You can't judge me! I'm only able to hear and speak once I'm ,like ,5 years old. I'm 7 now, and I haven't seen my planter since I was 2. Think of this as a James Bond mission."

"James Bond mission?" That got me thinking. Even if this mission was nothing like the films, I could pretend it was a new film, sneaking around corners, gunning down mercenaries. Every boy wants to be a spy, and this was my chance.

"I'll do it!" I said, almost too excitedly.

"Thanks, old bean, thank you." Did I hear a sniffle? "You'll find her at the West side of this field."

"Okay, I'll go now." I turned to go.

"Oh, and kid?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't get shot."

Oh, did I mention there was a civil war going on?

________________________________________________________________________________

Please. Explaining it would take a whole other book. Basically the Prez thought it was a good idea to start killing random people, so now there's a war. The country's been split into two - the East and the West. I live on the East, I guess the sunflower's girl was also on the East, since she'd been taken by the West.

One question was still burning in my mind. Who is she?

I probably didn't know her. And even if I did, that wouldn't make meeting her any easier.

An hour later, I was on the West field. It's a miracle I'd survived. While journeying here, I'd set off six mines, alerted 8 sentry guards and nearly got my face surgically removed by a burst of machine gun fire. It occurred to me that the flower didn't tell me where the girl was exactly, so I guess I'd start looking. I didn't have to look far. 5 paces in, and I'd fallen down a trapdoor, fallen what felt like a mile and landed facefirst in a lake of water.

Now guys, if you're ever in a freefall and you know you'll hit water, you should take a diving stance, so you can slice through the surface unharmed. Unfortunately, at the time I hadn't known this, so when I'd climbed out my face felt like it was on fire. Ironic, since I was in water. I was also soaked, but that didn't matter right now. I had to find the girl.

I scanned my surroundings. Honestly, there wasn't much to see. If you like damp, pitch black spaces, you should come down here sometime.

I lit a torch and looked again. It was a stone cave, with no entry or exit except for the hole I fell through. At the end of the cave there was a set of iron bars, and guess who was behind it.

It was the girl.

Well, I guess it was the girl. I didn't recognise her at all. She had bright magenta hair with black stripes. Wore a black bracelet on both wrists and a punk rock T-Shirt.

She fixed a murderous look at me. "What do you want now, dumbo?" She used a word a lot stronger than dumbo. I guess she thought I was one of the West guys.

I tried to regain my composure. "Listen, I don't know who you are, but a talking sunflower in my field sent me here to save you."

She frowned. "You're crazy."

I shrugged. "Maybe. I don't know. But I'm still getting you out of here, mainly because I don't have a choice."

"Why me?"

"Stop asking questions so I can break you out!" I whipped out a pickaxe and broke the bars down. "Now come on, let's get out of here." I noticed a badge on her t-shirt, like those ones that store employees wear that say Hello, my name is. In this instance, her name tag read Wolf. Still, I thought it quite rude to assume her name. "What's your name?" I asked politely.

"You can call me Vargen."

"But your name tag says - "

"I don't care what it says!" She suddenly snapped. "Vargen. Yeah?"

"Okay, okay." I raised my hands in surrender. "Sheesh."

"Let's move. The West guys will be doing their regular patrol in this cell soon." Wolf - sorry, Vargen tapped a part of the wall three times. With a silent hiss, the wall slid to the side.

"Wha-" I was pretty surprised. "How did you know that was there?"

"I watch the patrol guys leave and enter. Now let's go. I know the way."

"That's a dead meme."

She slapped me. I was really getting tired of being slapped. "Shut up and let's go." She dragged me into a small doorway that read 'Fire Exit.' Unfortunately, there was a guy standing right there, facing us. He looked surprised, but he would get over his shock soon.

He didn't have time to. Vargen dropped him instantly with a roundhouse to the neck. "Ouch." I muttered. "Let's keep moving. Remind me not to get on your bad side."

"You're already on my bad side." She slunk into another doorway, and I followed.

We emerged into a grassy plain. The sky was dark hell red, and there were hills everywhere. The war had really taken its toll. Vargen tapped me. "Don't get distracted. Keep moving."

I didn't have a problem with that. But before she took a step, my keen eyes fixed on a particular hill. My mother always said I was looking for things I didn't know. I guess this was one of those moments.

I kept staring at the hill, Vargen looking incredulously at me. "What's wrong with you?" she hissed. "Keep moving." I didn't answer. The hill was really far away, but I could make out a silhouette - a hooded figure holding something long and pointing it towards us. I didn't know what it was at first, but when I saw the glow, my mind processed things very quickly without me even thinking about it.

Vailent 241 Sniper Rifle. Can be loaded with explosive ammunition. Deadly at long range.

I had half a second to react. I pushed Vargen to the side, yelled "MOVE!" and looked back at the sniper. I didn't get a good look. The bullet landed 2 feet in front of me, and I crazy hoped it wasn't explosive.

It was explosive.

The bullet vaporised with a loud BANG, knocking me back onto the grass with amazing force. I slammed my head on the ground, and my vision became blurry and red. I could hear loads of gunfire, even if I couldn't see it that well. Suddenly I felt movement, and I could just about make out the shape of Vargen. "Don't worry, man. I'm gonna get you out of here." Her voice sounded like it was underwater. I was losing consciousness, my vision kept blinking. "Stay awake, you have a better chance of surviving if you don't close your eyes." I couldn't. Her voice faded out, and a second later, so did I.

I woke up in a barn, and for a second I panicked. I couldn't remember who I was, why I was here, how to speak. My arm was in a sling, and there was a thin sheet over me. Then I saw Vargen approaching from the doorway, and suddenly I remembered.

"You," I squawked. "You saved my life."

She shrugged. "It was the least I could do after you saved mine."

I tried to speak, but she placed a finger on my lips. "Don't talk unless I ask you to, you need to rest." She sighed. "What's your name?"

"Fox," I managed to choke out. "Fox de Roux."

"I really appreciate what you did, Fox. I didn't see that sniper coming. It was because of you that we're both alive."

"Don't thank me, thank the magic flower." She laughed a bit, and a second later, I did too. I didn't care about the pain that flared through my entire body when I moved. Then I realised why. For my entire life, I'd lived with only one person, my mother. And she couldn't care less about me. Vargen had saved my life. That meant she'd cared about me.

For the first time in 15 years, I'd felt something I'd never known before.

Happiness.

"Back there was crazy, huh?" she said.

"Back there? Where are we now?" I asked.

"When I dragged you out of there, I panicked because I didn't know where to go. I moved us for about 10 minutes, and I just came across this barn. It was completely deserted, humans or otherwise. I figured I'd make a stop here and patch you up." She wiped her brow. "What have you been eating, man? Dragging you around was hard work!"

I laughed, and pain flared up in my limbs again. My arm felt like it was being crushed. I winced, and Vargen turned serious again. "You need some more sleep. From what I can figure, it's around 10 in the night right now. I say we can sleep now, and we'll be ready to go in the morning."

"Okie doke." She turned to leave, but I called her back. "Oh, and thanks, Vargen."

Her expression softened again. "Call me Wolf." She whispered, and she walked out of the door. "See you in the morning." She called down the hallway.

I woke up with a slap to the face. "Rise and shine, sunshine." said Wolf, sitting on the end of the bed. Light was streaming through the window, and I was almost blinded. "Come on, let's go." She smiled, and walked out of the door. As I got out of bed, I noticed two things: my body didn't hurt anymore, and the sling holding my arm was gone. I felt a lot better than last night. Yawning, I walked outside into the warm sunshine, where Wolf was waiting. "Isn't it February? Why is it so bright today?"

She shrugged. "Guess it's just one of those days. Ready to go?"

"Where are we going?"

"Home, of course. Back to the East. I'm sure it isn't far. I figure we can walk it for an hour, and we'll be there."

"So you do live in the East."

She grinned. "Where did you think I lived? South Dakota? Cut the chatter and let's go."

We left the barn behind and walked East.

While we walked, we discussed a lot of things. Our family. The war. How stupid the President was, and how Wolf thought she'd be much better. 10 minutes later, we were both tired, so we sat by a lake and skipped stones.

"Fox?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you know what day it is today?"

That hadn't occurred to me before. The events in the last few days hadn't given me a lot of time to contemplate the date. Boom! Another rhyme! How's that Shakespeare? Eat that!

Wolf threw a stone. "It's February the 14th. Valentine's Day. Have you ever celebrated before?"

I hesitated, before answering, "Not really. I've been single all my life."

"Then I've only got one thing to ask you."

"Oh?" I genuinely didn't know what to expect. I didn't know much about Valentine's Day, so I was keen to hear this question.

"Do you..." She cleared her throat. "Would you be my Valentine?" Her face screwed up as soon as she finished that sentence, so I knew that was a really tough question for her to ask.

My facial expression didn't change. Inside, I was having a mini-meltdown. I'd only known her for a few days, and she was already asking to be Valentines. I didn't know if that was common or what, but I knew there was only one answer. Besides, she did look quite cool, and her personality fitted my type of friend perfectly. I was sure that once I got over her wake-up slaps, we'd be cool.

I smiled and said, "Of course I would. I'd hate to spend Valentine's Day alone again." She gave me the biggest grin I'd ever seen, and she did something even more unexpected. She hugged me. I didn't recognise the feeling, although I suppose never being hugged by your parents will do that.

After she let me go, I suggested we continue walking, because the sun would set soon. She agreed wholeheartedly, and we walked off into the distance.

The sun shining down on us.

The two of us, side by side.

Holding hands.

Prompt: Breakup
why me?

//

“Why me? Why not break up with the person you obviously called baby at the club last night? I thought I was your baby Tyler. I don’t understand.” The fighting between the couple escalated until it was at a shrill and complete yell. Heartstrings tore, life was utterly and depressingly delayed until this fighting stopped. Owens stormed into his (and his former fiance)’s shared bedroom and he tore threw the closet, shoving all of Tyler’s clothes and possessions into the suitcase. He then threw it out of the room, papers scattering and clothes flying out the hastily closed suitcase. “Owens.” “Don’t you dare.” “Owens, I’m sorry.” “Ty, you should have apologised before you decided to end it.” There was audible sobbing from Tyler at the cold edge in his ex-fiance’s voice. Owens, angry, his vision clouded with tears, took off the engagement ring and threw it behind him. “Go.” Owens spoke that final word as the sound of a suitcase rolling could be heard, and the front door to the apartment was heard slamming.
