These are the negatives;

People could make a thread and lock it straight away for no reason, this will flood the thread section with threads which no one can reply on.

It's not the hardest thing for a staff member to lock a thread, and we try to do it as fast as we can.

This is such a small thing which isn't really that necessary to be added, as like I state above staff can just lock it simply, there's no need to implement players able to lock just so they can do it instead.
Being able to lock the threads have absolutely zero impact on thread spamming. This is already an issue, which has nothing to do with thread locking. Players being able to comment on a spam thread won't change the fact that it's spam in any shape or form. A locked spam thread will be treated the same as an unlocked spam thread. The report button still works on locked threads just as good as it works on unlocked ones. It will not increase or reduce the amount of spam threads that are created.

Yeah, it's a small improvement. Yeah, it's not necessary, but neither was automatic thread locking after a few weeks. The real question is not if it's necessary, but will it help in any way, shape, or form? The answer is yes.

I wasn't talking about spam threads, I was talking about normal threads that people think it would be funny to lock it straight away which will then spam the forums with locked threads that no one can comment on.

Well if there happens to be threads of the sort there's an easy solution: deleting those threads. Those sorts of threads will most likely be considered spam threads and they're very simple to deal with.

I misunderstood what you said. You said "flood the thread section" which is essentially saying "spam the thread section". I didn't know that's not what you meant. Apologies.

Sorry, my bad, but yes in my own opinion I do believe it would spam the thread list with locked threads, even if people don't do it it is a possibility that they could.

And we can't just delete them as they are normal threads which players have locked even though they locked them straight away, although if this was added this could be a rule which would be not to lock threads straight away.

It depends what sorts of threads you're referring to. If it's an important thread, say a suggestion, then players shouldn't see the need to lock the thread as they're most likely waiting for other opinions. If it's just an off topic thread saying "hi" then it's unnecessary and deletion should be considered.

Yea, what @Aluux said. Also, threads lock after 2 weeks anyway so that's another reason why it shouldn't be implemented.

Well I think the staff haven't allowed us to lock our own threads for a reason. I'm going with a +0 for now

What's that reason? I mean I could request a thread lock and then have this locked. It's the exact same thing as a staff member doing it.

Wow this got confusing. Yet without reading anything I am just gonna jump right in to explain my thoughts
...
Giving a player this option is a neat yet problems will come around. One problem might be locking a post too early or someone was very influenced into the suggestion or topic and then they decide to post a thread on that making it repetitive as well as a lot of suggestions being made. Again this is only a posibility. Then again this is a posibility when a thread is locked anyway. Yet my main question that will make my +1 go to -1 is ....
Is there any point when a thread will not be locked if the user requests it?

Why I asked this: If a the answer is yet then I would go -1 because of this happening. Yet if no then +1 because of the user always being allowed to lock their thread. I could explain more yet that would be pointless to do.

-0 Wouldn't Be Easier Contacting The Moderation Than Locking Yourself But Still There May Be No staff Online So -0

How about this: players can lock the thread only if 2 other people have commented. What's the point of locking a thread early/locking it before anyone has even commented?

Yeah I agree with you. I'll add that now.

It lifts a burden off of the staff to watch for requests. And it honestly feels more personal when you do it yourself.
