To be honest I do not think this needs to be implemented. Helpers and up only should have access to that so it's a -1 for me.
Edit:
Personally I think this idea wouldn't work out. There is some people who would lock a thread in order to stop opinions that don't agree with theirs (i.e. this thread having so many positive ones, and one negative one, so it would be locked.) It would also prevent certain staff members from commenting on things that they need to, if players lock them. -1
This is not necessarily a bad thing but I too think this could be abused.

I would not lock my thread because someone disagreed, but I suppose some people would. And if it was someone new to the forums, maybe they don't know how to lock their thread, so this might not matter as much.
This is understandable, however it could cause quite the amount of discontent amongst players, which would be a very bad thing.
How would this cause any disconnect among players?
knowing this community as being "perfect" for 3 years, this wont happen. Even if it does, sorry for the people that disagree but they can basically cry eachother a river. Staff lock threads if the owner requests it no matter what. @Kona can you confirm this next time u get online
I believe that they have to.

Overall this would be added mainly for convenience, to not bother staff.

I know staff lock them anyways, but there is a difference between being upset with someone for locking a thread you wanted to comment on and having a staff member lock it instead. Plus, I believe they'd have to add extra programming to the site to allow people to lock ONLY their own posts, which could be a bit of a hassle.

I think that they could add this to the thread options that the owner of the thread has and instead of just "Change Title" there could be a "Thread Lock" option but it would need to be hit twice just in case if someone miss clicks.

Or you could unlock the thread too :p

Staff are obliged to lock a thread... when the owner says to lock the thread.

This gets rid of the staff having to get involved... so the owner can take control of his thread.

It doesnt matter what COULD happen. What if someone hurts my feelings by locking this because i disagree with them!?!?!?!??!?!???!/1?1/1?! it wont matter. They tell a staff to lock the thread and the thread is locked. Kaput. cry. This is just disabling staff member involvement. Thats all.

As well as waiting for a staff to lock it :p

yeah that too. you can cry all you want that your opinion was blocked, ive never seen in my time someone lock a thread for being disagreed with, but even if they did. isnt that basically saying you won and they gave up?

ok guys, I believe the main reason for this is that it will mainly help staff out and not need to spend time on locking threads, if the owner requests a thread lock they obviously want a thread lock and staff will do it regardless of other's reactions of this. So by making it so users can lock their own thread will save staff a bit of time for the forums.

and it would give the thread creator more power over their own thread.

I'm staying neutral I see positives and negatives

Right. This one is hard for me. But my personal opinion is that this should not be implemented

This should not be implemented for a couple of reasons.

Moderation

Staff has ` Lock thread ` for a reason. If either someone has requested it or someone is being rude and everyone is just arguing about it etc etc. But what use would your idea have? You're right that it will save staffs time, but in another way, it wont. Also, if the owner of the thread locks their own thread, they would kind of be mini-modding. Locking threads is a staff-only perk. And I feel as if it should stay that way.

Second reason,

Abuse

I bet some of you are thinking, " Well, how can we abuse this lock thread? ". In my opinion, you can abuse it in many ways. Firstly, lets stay I just found a random website and I just found out I have all permissions on this website ( just an example ). Some other people would do something like this " Lol. lets troll the owner, I will make a thread about a format u need to use and ill lock it ". That is what the owner is supposed to do, but its not for a non-staff to do. Rubbish point but I'm sure you'll get me.

Final reason,

Unfairness

Well, I think it is just frowned upon the staff if anyone attempts to do their job when their not supposed to. Thread lock has its own purposes. It has loads of purposes. Specific purposes that non-staff shouldn't really use.

Overall: -1.

Obviously their is a reason behind staff locking threads and not players. One reason this wouldn't work is because there are certain places in which threads shouldn't be locked, this means players could abuse this and lock threads which shouldn't be locked. As well as this it takes 5 seconds for a staff member to lock a thread, therefor implementing this just to stop 5 seconds of a staff members time is not really necessary.

-1 from me

I'm not really seeing any good reason not to implement this here. Let's go over the existing arguments.

They can just delete unwanted opinions/posts for no reason!:
When a thread owner requests a staff member to lock their thread, we will do it no questions asked. Honestly, what's the difference in us staff members locking it upon request because the thread owner doesn't like something someone said or something related, and them doing it themselves? Players can also delete any post that another player makes on their own profile. Yes, that includes the posts that for whatever reason, players don't want them on their profile. The only difference between this and the suggestion here is that you can't actually delete the posts before locking. If anything, this suggestion is less of a problem than what I just mentioned. This is considering that the feature that I just spoke about was even a problem to begin with.

Players can troll!:
People wouldn't really be trolled by this because official threads are created by staff members or are sticky. That, and if someone tried to troll, like any other thread, it would be deleted. Being able to lock your own thread has little to nothing to do with if this will happen or not.

That's mini-modding!:
No, it's not. Changing your thread title, adding a thread prefix, editting your post, and deleting profile posts are not considered mini-modding. Locking your own thread is a very minor thing just like the previously mentioned features.

It's not necessary!:
Neither is threads automatically locking after a few weeks, the names of staff members on punishment appeals titles, or the ability for unregistered users to create reports on the forums, but they all are small improvements that help even a little bit, just like this suggestion.

This should be a staff-only perk!:
The same thing could be argued for deleting posts people make on your profile, but it's definitely there and possible. Not really much else to say about this as it doesn't really contain much to actually respond to.

It requires extra coding/software!:
The feature already exists for staff members, it's just a matter of giving permissions to another rank.

It would cause problems with the community!:
Again, normal players can already delete any post on their profile. That feature has been there forever without too many problems. It's not that big of a deal.

Why would people want to lock their own thread?:

This is a joke response by the way.

Due to the previous arguments being a bit inconclusive, and me actually liking this suggestion, I'm supporting it. However, there will definitely be no permission of normal players unlocking threads. This would defeat the purpose of thread locks in the first place. A confirmation would be nice too. But yeah, +1.

For both of these: this can be easily abused yes, but if someone requests a thread lock, that can be abused too. (I believe staff have to lock the thread if it's requested). And it's not just the five seconds, sometimes threads get a few more replies even after the owner has requested the lock. And you can just turn off the ability for players to do this to their own threads in some sections.

These are the negatives;

People could make a thread and lock it straight away for no reason, this will flood the thread section with threads which no one can reply on.

It's not the hardest thing for a staff member to lock a thread, and we try to do it as fast as we can.

This is such a small thing which isn't really that necessary to be added, as like I state above staff can just lock it simply, there's no need to implement players able to lock just so they can do it instead.
