General The Use Of Mental Illnesses

Thank you for your opinion. As I must say though, people are generally not necessarily proud to have a mental illness. They may be proud to have over come it, or other things like such. So personally I dont see the exact point, but I do agree that using such terms in an appropriate and cautious manner would be alright.

I didn't say they were proud to have it :) but look I understand where you are coming from. I help people with mental illnesses almost as a job. The thing with mental illnesses you've got to accept them and that's always the first thing I tell people when I treat them. And maybe that's there way of accepting them.

I completely understand what your trying to put across, but I just feel like there are bigger issues to worry about :) if you understand?

Well, I believe I should come forward on this one :)

I myself have been dealing with anxiety and depression for 7years now. I don't find the use of usernames like "DepressedCow" wrong. I think they are perfectly fine. And look I've been through and am going through those feelings myself.

The reason I generally don't have a problem with them is that if that's how people want to express themselves let them. Maybe it's got a more positive message behind the name. Maybe they are spreading awareness? Like if I changed my name to "AnxietyKiller" there's a positive meaning behind it. It's positive due to the fact I want the anxiety killed or to be gone.

I know I'm going to get people disagree with me. But I find you're being quite petty with it. I understand you've been through bad times, so have I with mental health problems. Absolutely horrid things I got so so bad needed a Doctor and all.

You get people who maybe use their sexuality as their username, there are others with their characteristics (hair colour, eye colour) and there are others who use mental health disorders that they have been through. It's part of them, I feel as a believer in this myself you should express your mental health as it can help you find support, it can help you get better.

My look on things like this is names that have Swearing or rude things in them shouldn't be allowed and thats a rule. But I think mental health usernames should be. Although I wouldn't recommend using one as it can be upsetting and it's sometimes misinterpreted

Thanks for taking your time to read, bare in mind this is just my opinion and will probably be with diddly squat to most. So take it how you will :)

As I said, yes, it is okay and up to the player themself to decide if that's how they want to express themself, but I would still discourage since I believe there is a better way to do it instead of putting their mental illness in their username. I just wouldn't want to be known as "the person with attachment issues" by every single stranger who sees my username, whether it be me overcoming it or not, there's just better ways to do it. This is however, my opinion and people may do what they want.

Yes of course! I comepletely understand your reasoning. I just find it can be more positive with less use of them in a harsh way. If people were to put such things in their user, I could find that people would look upon it as a joke. For example, I had a friend (this isn't a mental illness, it's just an illness in general) and they had put a very common physical "disorder" followed by the word monkey. I feel as though that was highly inappropriate and feel if "AnorexicMonkey" or "DepressedMonkey" were such usernames, those would be deemed as inappropriate as well. But I completely understand your reasoning <3

I have noticed a fair bit that the use of Mental Illnesses (in usernames, or general chat) is fairly common. I've seen usernames that including such mental illnesses as depression or anorexia. I, personally have dealt with mental illnesses, and find it awfully sad when I find such topics in usernames. Now, joking or not. I feel like the use of Mental Illnesses in a username should not be allowed, as it can be very hurtful to those who experience it. Not to say those with the usernames do not, but I feel it'd be more appropriate to not have that in your username, as some people may take that as a joke. Secondly, I have noticed people quoting harsh things that have to do with mental illnesses. In my opinion, when someone talks about a mental illnesses, I instantly want to help them as much as I can. Sadly, a lot of the time these are in fact jokes. And I have witnessed this on PZ. I feel like talking about Mental Health appropriately would be okay, although it may not be. As some people could get offended. So maybe the use of talking about mental disorders could be dropped, for good? I don't know what you all think, but this is just my opinion. Have a good day. <3

I'm actually glad that someone has brought it up. Way too many people joke about mental illnesses.

I 100% agree. I've been struggling with mental illness a lot recently and I find that I feel worse about it when I see people having stuff like that in their usernames.

A couple days ago I was online and someone said in global chat "I got depressed when I didn't get..." ( @Arlah would remember ) This was actually really offensive - coming from someone who's struggling with depression. You'd expect staff to deal with it, correct? Well the complete opposite happened. Whilst I should've reported I didn't. For this reason I feel like there should be an update in staff guidelines - not to punish anyone who uses this term however maybe just looking out for it a bit more?

I completely agree and could not have stated this better myself. I have had my fair share of problems with my mental health and I find it extremely offensive when people use mental illnesses as adjectives or jokes. For instance, using the word “anorexic” to mean skinny is not just offensive but is completely out of line. I find it extremely difficult to comprehend how people think talking about their mental health is easy, when I bring mine up I often times end up in tears. Nobody is “proud” to have a disorder, it’s a constant battle day after day and often times makes it hard to wake up in the morning. In no way should you be so proud that you have a disorder that you want it in your username. Having disorders does not make you cool and dianosing yourself with them makes you look arrogant and inconsiderate to anyone with that disorder. This was very well stated and should be implemented. Thank you for making this suggestion on behalf of all people currently suffering with mental ailments.

I completely agree with all of you, thank you! Really would be glad to see this implemented in our community. <3

I think this rule should be elaborated to say "Inappropriate / Offensive Minecraft account names are not allowed." This is a simple solution to a simple problem and it's vague for the purpose that there's a lot of things that are inappropriate and the rule would fit just that.

This could be good and bad. It's subjective to the person viewing it, so there is no one definite way of knowing if a username is offensive. This makes ban appeals harder to control, since it is subjective. I think something more specific would be better, so it doesn't create arguments on what is offensive/inappropriate.

I agree. This rule should definitely be implemented. I've dealt with mental illnesses and I just hate it when people use things like that as "jokes". Like said, they are being completely inconsiderate to those who actually have the problem mentioned in their user. Things like mental illnesses make it hard for people to wake up and want to live through their day. Whether it's their way of expressing themselves or they think it's just funny, I just don't find it appropriate. I end up in tears half the time I have to talk about mine, I just find it insane that people just casually mention this topic and laugh it off. Usernames like the ones mentioned hurt. <3 +1

Well it depends on the situation. If the person is really experiencing some kind of tragic situation and is having a rough time, we should comfort and encourage them. But if it's in a joking matter, then we should warn them. Mental illness is not something to joke about as this can cause bad endings and so on. I would agree on @KittysACanadian is staff use it to help others who really are in need as well as punish those who are making fun of them.

I agree with this, but I'm a little disappointed that this isn't viewed under the common sense clause already. It's kinda just one of those things that should never be joked about, but for some reason many continue to still joke about it.

Just why nowadays teens are getting more depressed and negative? Personally, my classmates and I are happy and positive all year long. Maybe it's some sort of thing related to Western Communities

So what you’re saying is you’re gonna ban someone who has a mental illness and make them feel more crappy? These people whoever they may be probably need some attention and help and when you ban them it’s makes it even worse on them.

Attention does not help mental illness, professional help does. If they truly are suffering- playing on a Minecraft server is not the proper way to cope and the ban can give them time to reflect and seek help. She did not say to ban people with mental illnesses and I feel as though you are misconstruing her words heavily. Simply, to ban players with mental illnesses in their usernames because they are inappropriate and are not the proper way to convey that you are suffering from something.
