I've been delaying this post for a while. I've been writing this for weeks and finally have the courage to post it. There is strong language. I tried to censor it without ruining it by taking parts out completely but I might still get in trouble, if so I'll just have to edit some parts out to the best of my ability ;/
Please tell me how I did, I'm working so hard on the story line for this and I've been drawing this out for a long time. I want to know what you guys think!

Everything happened so quickly. My mind blurred. I had been so focused on the bright computer screen I was sat in front of that the blaring alarm that sounded off was hardly noticeable at first. The shrill honking and beeping of the building wide emergency alert screamed relentlessly. A singular flashing red light flickered across the room accusingly.
Was there a fire drill I missed the memo for?
I clasped my hands over my ears as the alarm droned on longingly without mercy. As my hands raised to my ears I knocked a pen from my desk to the floor. My eyes trailed the black pen as it fumbled on the floor, rolling over the carpet and stopping next to scattered papers lining the floor. Among the papers were paperclips, rubber bands and other small office supplies. Someone had knocked over the water cooler in their haste, leaving a large sopping puddle to dampen the cheap carpeting for a two foot radius.
Glancing at my surroundings, I noticed my frightened co-workers running about. It was like watching chickens scattering as a fox slyly weaved its way past the chicken wire and into the coop. Some were grabbing items, others hightailed it to the stairs. I suppressed my dismay and disappointment as I saw some of the employees lined up at the elevator.
Looking past the cubicles surrounding my own I spotted Amanda’s office. For once in the day she wasn't screaming for everyone to get working and hurry up. For a moment I appreciated the alarms ring over the shrill, loud, authoritative female voice. I shook myself mentally, this wasn't the time to reminisce.
Dodging warm bodies and run away faxes, I managed to reach her door. The shades were closed, the lights appeared to be off. Something in the back of my mind screamed for me to head for the stairs. She could still be in there. There wasn't time to contemplate. I dug my sweaty hand into my pocket, grabbing out the spare office key I’d been intrusted with and unlocked the door.
Scanning the room no sign of Amanda lingered. For the most part the office seemed untouched in retrospect to the disastrous clutter outside the door. She must have already evacuated. I turned to leave, a glimpse of something shiny caught my eye. I regrettably turned back, looking for the object. A small pastel purse sat in the corner of the room, slung back onto of a black jacket. Something had to happen, something major. She would never just leave her purse out like this, even with the door locked. Hesitantly I grabbed the purse and jacket. She’ll thank me. The entire floor looked like a hurricane had hit. The floor was already cleared of people, nothing but the sound of a small desk fan disturbed the air.
Chills tickled at my spine. I imagined what a zombie apocalypse would do to this place. This is exactly how it would look. I shivered, images of living lumps of flesh and skin slowly dragging their feet, hundreds of them filling the city streets. I quickly reminded myself of the reality of the situation, booking it down the seven flights of stairs.
This is going to make me look like a d%&*. Rummaging through Amanda’s purse I pulled out her phone dialing the familiar pattern of my apartment land line. The phone buzzed eight times before a response came through. “Hey, this is Harrison, whats up?”
“Harri, something came up at work, I-”
“I’m just pulling your leg, this is the answering machine. If you have a message for me or Eric leave it after the beep”. I massaged my temples, watching my step as I descended the stairs. What a complete child. He must have changed the message last week. A low beep sounded.
“Hey little brother, it’s Eric”, only 3 more flights of stairs to go. “Something came up, I’m not sure what’s going on yet. I’m pretty sure we’re just having a drill I forgot about. The building is being evacuated, I just want you to know that if anything happened I’ll be home soon. Don’t go anywhere”. Thinking about it now I really do hope this is a drill. If it isn't I'm probably f&^%#!* dead for all this time I've wasted. “And I uhhh…” What was left to say? “I love you Harrison”. I felt taken aback by my words after they spilled from my mount. “I love you so much”.
Reaching the last stair, my hand extended to push open the lobby door. As my fingertips connected with the door a cold hand grabbed me from behind, pulling me backwards. I toppled backwards awkwardly, falling onto something softer than the cold tiled floor. A short uff came from behind me. My head spun, turning to see two familiar faces.
“Amanda?” My voice cracked unexpectedly as I scrambled to get out of her lap. “Sophie? What are you guys doing under the stairs”. Without any explanation they pulled me back, further under the stairs. I opened my mouth to object, only for Amanda’s hand to clasp over my mouth. Their eyes filled with fear. The door to the lobby suddenly slammed open. A loud sniffing and grunting noise could be heard. I felt my lungs fill with fire, my heart beat quickened. I just wanted to scream. The snorting came closer.
A red pair of all-star chucks stopped two inches from my face. Terrified of what was happening I bucked, pushing back into Amanda’s torso. Her hand squeezed over my mouth more firmly. The figure continued to sniff the air, turning towards the stairs. A loud humming noise echoed through the tower. Without another sound the figure pushed the lobby door back open, exiting the room.
Amanda’s hand released its grip on my face. I gave a soft grunt, glaring at her as I massaged the nail indents that were printed on my cheek from her fresh manicure. She gave me a small apologetic smile, turning toward Sophie and nodding. “Something went very wrong in the lab today…” Sophie rasped, her lips were dried and cracked. She seemed abnormally pale, her normally vivid and warm welcoming face was now dull. As if a dementor had come straight out of the Harry Potter books she carried around continuously, absorbing every last ounce of happiness and life from her. “We created something that doesn’t belong here on earth. Something that could very likely destroy the entire human race”. Her words hit me like a runaway train, slamming into the back of my throat. I gulped nervously. I thought our company just made light bulbs and flashlights, what on earth could have gone so god d*&# wrong there?
“The Kyatic laboratory team has gone too far this time”. Amanda’s voice murmured softly. I shook my head, my mind spun like a carousel out of control.
“Can someone explain to me what exactly is happening?” I asked with a demanding tone. “What the hell could have happened down there that's so life threatening. Is this like spiderman, because i swear if there's some blue electricity freak running ramped that was charged by f*&^$%! eels so help me god”. Sophie’s dull face lit up slightly, her lips formed a slight smile.
“Even when confronted with serious news you still manage to find the time to be a sarcastic a#$%&*!^. You’re a real piece of work Eric,” Sophie scoffed. “But seriously,” She started, clearing her throat, “we’ve made a huge mistake”. Her voice trailed off slightly as she looked to Amanda. Amanda nodded, giving her approval. “We’ve created a demon”. I raised my eyebrow questioningly, looking from Sophie to Amanda. Neither of them showed any emotion. Their expressions were simultaneously calm, cool and collected. Neither showed signs of breaking character.
“How stupid do you think I am”. I rolled my eyes so far back into my skull I swear I could see the pathetic little piece of mush called a brain. “What do you mean by “demon”. Surely you don’t mean a literal one. Aren’t you a scientist Sophie?”
“Eric- we don’t even quite know how it happened. We were trying to make a gateway and it went all wrong…” Sophie seemed unsure of her own answer. “There was a hypothesis for making a gateway between us and a spirit dimension. I didn’t believe it at first. I didn’t know what to think of such an absurd idea. When the head of our department brang the blueprints and theories for such a device I thought he was mad. I spent days looking over the facts, notes, anything on the project that would prove to be inadequate or wrong. But I couldn’t”. Sophie stopped momentarily. “There was nothing wrong with the algorithms. Everything made sense. It sounds crazy, but it was. We pulled aside our top scientists and began to develope the dimension portal on the side, it took us months,” She looked at Amanda apologetically. “We didn’t tell anyone outside of the laboratory that we were developing this machine. They would shut down our work for wasting corporate money. So we didn’t tell a soul.”
Amanda interrupted, “They got this, this thing to work and they couldn’t control it. The other end of the spectrum ended up in some demonic dimension and released something we don’t know how to control. Some sort of she-devil. Unfortunately not in a joking sense. Whatever crawled through that tear in the dimensions is lethal and extremely dangerous”. I looked from one to the other, my eyes shifting toward the door now and then.
“So what happens now”, I asked concerningly. “That thing is just running rampant through the streets?” My words has a fiery tint to them, a sense of annoyance, disbelief and disgust.
“We don’t know”, Sophie whispered.
“Don’t know? You don’t know? Thats real typical Sophie. So now we have this, this quote on quote “demon” on the loose and you have no way of stopping it?” My voice raised as I went on, “So you’re telling me that my life is in danger because you wanted to play scientist and work on some stupid gateway to hell? What kind of science even is that! I can’t even believe this is happening right now. I mean really- a dimensional gateway? This is ridiculous.” I could feel my blood boiling in my veins. “This is some bull&^%$”. I stood up, brushing myself off. “I can’t believe it's the f&^%$#* end of the world and I’m stuck with you two, no way”. I placed my hands on the cold steel door. “I’m getting out of here I’m so done, I swear-” I pressed on the door.
“Eric wait! What if she’s still out there?”, Sophie’s voice quivered anxiously.
“Then I’ll take my chances” I retorted, swinging the door open. I flinched slightly, anticipation spurred through my body. My eyes were shut tightly as I waiting for something to happen. A shove, a bite, anything, I was braced. But nothing happened. I fearfully opened one eye, shielding my face with my hands. My face flushed as I noticed co workers huddled in the lobby staring blankly. I let down my guard, scratching the back of my head. There were police officers littered throughout the sea of familiar faces, one dropped what he was doing, pulling his gun out and pointing it straight for my chest.
“Freeze”, he screamed, waiting until my hands were up to approach me. He patted down my sides, arms and legs for any sign of a possible weapon. “He’s clear”, the man bellowed, looking towards the door. “Are there more people in there”. I nodded obediently, stepping aside as he went to check for Sophie and Amanda. “Ma’am we have reason to believe there was a false alarm triggered. We’re still taking cautionary measures to make sure everything is okay, could you please stand up and follow me”. My scepticism of their story rose. I looked around hastily for another lab coat, someone who could confirm what I’d been told. My eyes landed on Olson, a head scientist from the lab. I pushed my way through the waves upon waves of bodies. Each seemed to be panicked and just as frantic and confused as I was. By the time I made my way to Olson he was already confronting someone else.
“You heard what… of course not… Sophie? You know how she gets… There's nothing to worry about I assure you Wilson, just go home. You need some rest… of course I’ll inform Amanda… yes alright, take care” I fidgeted in place as Olson finished talking to the other lab member. He turned to me, smiling. “Ah Eric, how are you. How far are you into your internship here now, five months? Your mother would have been so proud..”
“I’m not here to catch up”, I interrupted. “I want to know exactly what's going on, who pulled the alarm whats happening”. I was desperate for answers. “Sophie said something to me about a secret project that went wrong-”
“Poor Sophie”, Olson sighed, “She’s really a good worker but not the best insight for information. She’s just getting everyone riled up about nothing.” He placed a hand on my shoulder, his cold and clammy hands gave me shivers. “Tell you what intern- I mean Eric, its been a rough day. Why don’t you just go home for the day. I’ll tell Amanda I sent you off so you can come back Monday with a fresh attitude and mind.”
“Who pulled the alarm then, and what's the real reason” .
“Oh, silly me- I fell back into the alarm on accident. There is no real threat or danger. Just an old man who lost his balance is all”. Something about his response made me doubt him as well. “So you just run along, pack your things up and head on back to that brother of yours. Hm? How does that sound?” I bit at my lip anxiously, looking back over to Amanda and Sophie who were both being frisked. Why would they make all of that up? “Well my boy?” My attention snapped back to Olson.
“Yeah, I guess this just got me shaken up is all”, I responded hesitantly. “I’ll uh- I’ll go and rest for the day I guess. Ease my mind off of all this.”
“That’s a good lad, now you run along and collect your things, I’ll go speak with Amanda”. I nodded slowly, clearing my throat. He was right, I didn’t believe what Sophie had said in the first place. My eyes flickered across the room. Did I?
I went back to my cubicle, stepping around the puddle and papers. I collected my things hastily, shoving everything into my pack and swinging the bag over my shoulder. After the ordeal with the stairs I decided I deserved the elevator this time, pressing the first floor button and waiting quietly as the metal cube descended. Then the box stopped, moving upward for the last two seconds making my stomach drop. I hated that part. Once the doors opened I stepped out, ready to turn the corner. But I stopped, hearing hushed bickering coming from the other side of the wall.
I felt sympathetic for Sophie for a moment. She was overall extremely smart and hard working. I listened as a pair of footsteps descended the stairs to the lab. After the footsteps had faded a light female sob rang in my ears. I pictured Sophie slumped on the floor leaning against the wall and crying. I imagined myself running to her to comfort her. I can’t. I had to convince myself. If she knows you heard everything you’ll only bring more trouble.
The uneasiness I had felt when I was trapped under the stairs with her began to rekindle inside of my stomach. If they were acting, they were really convincing. My mind wandered back to
Harrison. I need to get home. I forced myself not to run to Sophie’s aid. Instead I waited until she left before entering the lobby.
Whatever was going on, it had to be scientifically explainable. I thought for another moment. Not that I’m all that into science. I never even enjoyed it. But something had to be more rational and sane than a demon crossing over through a rip in the dimension.
Please tell me how I did, I'm working so hard on the story line for this and I've been drawing this out for a long time. I want to know what you guys think!

“It’s our job to warn the general public and our friends about the danger they could now be in as a result of our mistake. I don’t want their blood on my hands. I’m willing to take responsibility for what happened in the lab today. Full responsibility. I won’t mention anyone else, including you, Mr.Olson”.
“It will lead back to me, and even Amanda even though she wasn’t informed about it. They’ll hold her responsible for not watching our funds and time management more closely. Do you want to see her in jail too? If you don’t keep your mouth shut I will personally get you fired. If you want Kyatic to keep funding your little arts and crafts then I’m warning you now; keep your mouth shut. You are not to tell a soul. If possible we will track and exterminate the pest. If not we will not let anything lead back to this company. If you say a word to law enforcement or to Mr.Kyatic you will regret it. Not to mention your student loan the company was willing to pay off. I would hate to see that burden drop onto you and your family, Miss Rendial.”
