Alright, here goes. First off, use the Speed perk. Unless you're really good and can combo kills with the enderman perk (which most players, myself included, cannot) speed is the best and most reliable perk.
Weapons:
(damages based on extensive ingame testing and also using the testing dummies)
One-Hit Sword: First weapon. 50 damage per hit, so you will kill an opponent 100% of the time by hitting them. When you have this, other people will too, so don't just run straight at them and swing, try to strafe left or right before getting to them, so you hit and they miss.

One-Shot Bow: Also 50 damage per hit. 100% kill with a hit, no matter the bow charge. This means if someone's close to you (remember, most players will also have the bow or one hit sword) bow spam by holding for about a second then letting go. You'll get a minimal power/damage shot, but all you need is for it to land.

Explosive Axe: 8 hearts per hit. You'll be fighting someone with a one hit sword or bow, if it's the bow just rush them and strafe left/right as you do, if it's the sword try to sneak up on them as you're at a massive disadvantage.

Grenade Launcher: Direct hit deals 7.5 damage. For some reason, if you don't hit them directly on the second shot, your opponent will go to .5 hearts instead of dead, but all you really need is one direct shot (to the player's body) and another direct shot or two nearby shots. Aim at the floor in front of players, it'll knock them back and buy you time to gun them down/reload.

Railgun: 7.5 hearts per hit. You can rob a kill if you see someone who got hit once by an explosive axe really easily. Other than that, the best way to get a kill with it is just aiming ahead of where people are (one block ahead of them if they're sprinting). Shoot them once, run away, then once your experience bar fills, turn and try to get the second shot off. You also have an advantage over grenade launcher people: if you're close to them, and they shoot themselves once, they're a one hit for your railgun.

Shot Bow: Three and a half hearts per hit. (Three shot kill) If you're ahead, try and shoot someone who's gotten railgunned once (one shot kill) or axed once (one hit kill). Takes about 1.5 seconds to charge before the shot-part of it is available. Keep in mind though, when the shot part isn't active, the single arrow still deals the same damage. This means that close range, bowspamming is completely viable. Also, aim higher than you'd expect with a normal bow, the arrows have less momentum.

Iron Sword: Four hit kill (3 hearts per hit). The fact that it's not 2.5 hearts means you can killsteal anyone with a shot bow really, really easily. If you're behind, you can steal a kill off someone with a homing launcher too. Cornering an opponent is pretty helpful, so they can't run away when you get them to one heart. The speed perk will also help here, as you can chase down anyone who tries to get away.

Homing-Rocket Launcher: Aim slightly above and slightly to one side of the player you're aiming for. The rocket will slam towards the ground when it gets close to the player, so make sure you're over-aiming. Same explosion with the normal grenade launcher, don't spam it, click once at a time. Keep away from your target so you don't self damage.

Explosive Crossbow: The arrow does two hearts, the explosion does two more. This means that if you shoot someone twice directly, you only need a nearby shot to finish them off. It's pretty hard to accidentally damage yourself with this, but try not to bowspam much. If you're not too good at aiming, point at the floor slightly in front of your opponent and it'll blast them back, especially if they're sprint jumping.

Mines: God I hate this weapon. Best target is someone with a bow, they walk backwards slowly, so run behind them and place it. Two people in a melee fight are also ideal; they're focused on the fight, so they won't notice when you plop a mine or three around them. Don't mine spam, you'll run out and the recharge time is foreverrrr. Also, commonly used doorways are your close friend for mines. Drop a mine in the doorway and you can forget about it, and there's a decent change a noob will stumble over it.

Knockback Axe: Same damage as an iron sword. Not too hard to kill with, but make sure you're not attacking someone with a ranged weapon. While you might have the melee-bow advantage, you give them a ton of range and time to kill you every time you hit them (10-30 blocks). Get someone against a wall or corner and it's just an iron sword.

Grenades: LOVE THESE. They are your best friend. If you're being chased, look straight down and drop one, it'll hit your chaser for about three hearts. Always aim ahead of your target and towards the ground, so the grenade has time to land and blow up. One massive issue with this is they will ALWAYS leave your target at half a heart; if you get two direct hits, three nearby hits, four-five low damage hits, your target will ALWAYS be at half a heart before the next explosion kills them. This means if you're in an area with a few players, you're almost definitely bound to get killstolen, so be careful and try to clean up fights where the winner took a couple hits.

Wooden Sword: Five hits to kill. Target people who are getting blown up by grenades, there's a good chance they're at a half heart and you can pick them off easily. It's also fairly easy to steal kills off of anyone with an explosive or ranged weapon, as you can dart in and melee the player to death before they have a good chance to kill you with the slow weapon. Be careful about targetting someone with mines, it's very easy to die this way.

Snowballs: 1.5 hearts per hit. Don't spam them, shoot about two per reload (every second or so) as the player's no-damage tick wears off just about as soon as the experience bar on the bottom hits halfway. If you don't want to pay attention to that, go to the training dummies and practice your timing so that you're throwing exactly when the damage enables. Other than that, aiming is pretty easy, you can pick off someone with a bow by strafing side to side and taking them out, but be careful because when you lower your opponent so slowly, it's easy to lose your kill to someone with a higher damage weapon. Targeting someone with mines or grenades is ideal, as they can fight back the least.

Fists: Good luck. You need to be decent at PvP or really lucky to get a kill with them. Always target someone dying to grenades or the grenade launcher or explosive bow (remember, explosions that aren't direct often leave a target at half a heart) . The speed perk is invaluable here as you might die once or twice.

Key points: Nobody's read this far, but whatever, I had fun making it. The speed perk doesn't activate until you die once, so don't think it's bugged and terrible. Still the best perk that's the most consistent. Uh, other general things. Don't try to melee someone down with a better melee weapon (wood sword v iron sword, explosive axe v one hit sword) as unless you're wayyy better than them you'll rarely get the kill. Can I even post something this long? I guess it's time to see. Took about a half hour to type and two hundred games of experience (in the past 150 I've lost 6) to know all this. Feel free to ask more specific questions if you have trouble with a weapon, or you're not ahead so you have to fight different weapons than what I specified. (I usually win when everyone else is around 9-10, so I fight better weapons. If you're fighting against worse weapons I have different tips, feel free to ask)

Thanks for this! I'm really bad at Downgrade (after the update), so I don't usually win, as people seem to have more experience playing it (I play murder for the majority of the time). Anyways, I did read to the end and I got the speed perk, thanks!

I found way too much fun reading this. Mostly because i used to post random stuff like this. But i liked it. Ive also ran that one perk with the 2x damage with your fist to try to finish games quickly (toward the end is where the game normally starts to slow down, so sometimes having that gets you through those last couple ranks quicker), but i do agree that the speed perk is overall better. Also THAT GRENADE THING MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW. No joke i would see fights of like 5 people and im always like "ok ill throw a couple grenades down, im bound to kill someone" and i never do and ifisbsinfksbsjdinswib. But thats good to know lol. Good job though ;D

I'm glad you made this. I didn't read the entire thing, but I usually use most of the things you suggested. I think this will really help new players who want to get into the flow of Downgrade quickly.

This must've taken you a while to write, and I commend you for doing so. New players who aren't really familiar with DG -- myself included -- can definitely benefit from this.

Thanks for the feedback! Anything I missed/should add?
Maybe you could make another thread for in depth for the Perks because you know how much we get called a Hacker just by our speed perk so maybe making a thread for the Perks could be pretty helpful AND support other people's play styles

ALSO i made my Signature have a link to this thread Prison
