Prologue

Tests were starting. It was September, a very crisp month, and the Oaklin College exams were beginning.

The Tests - Alex Silver

Alex pushed the white-blonde hair from his face. He sauntered into the building, looking around. His hair was wafted by the wind into his grey eyes. A holographic cyborg blinked into existence, created by an illuminated blue beam projected from a black box suspended from a ceiling, slightly askew.

‘Hello Alexander Hunter Silver!’ exclaimed the hologram loudly, his voice echoing throughout the building. It wasn’t that big, a 70x90ft black dome, made up of squares, some straight, some curved around at the dome’s corners.

‘So… you are?’ questioned Alex.

‘I am O.C.A.S.P, Oaklin College Automated Systematic Program, and I am your trainer for today! You have three different areas for your exam, all compacted into a data wave,’ replied Ocasp, as Alex made a confused face and Ocasp sighed, ‘It’s a hologram…’

Alex nodded.

‘A writing test, a fighting test and a coding test. First test: Fighting. Good Luck!’ Ocasp dissolved into a blue cloud, being whisked into the projector.

Blue light blasted across the arena, a hologram activating. It was a two story building, and a blue screen appeared in front of Alex:

Take a weapon from behind you, and take out all 20 soldiers and rescue the hostage. There is a timer on the left of your screen which will start when you take a weapon off the wall. On the top right is how many soldiers are left. Good luck!

Alex grabbed a double-bladed knife from the wall and the 5 minute timer beeped into life. He rushed through the building, 3 soldiers coming from upstairs. They wore black metallic tracksuits, and things that looked like VR headsets. They all held glowing batons, and one had a tiny handgun. Alex jumped at the one with the gun, elbowing his chest and twisting his gun arm, before kneeing his gut and kicking another soldier. He slid under the 2nd soldier and tripped him up. The 3rd one grabbed Alex’s arms, but Alex knew what to do. Headbutt.

17/20!

The Tests - Augustine Soto

Augustine had gotten to the dome late. She pulled her black hood further over her head, hiding her chocolate-coloured hair. A cyborg stood before her, emanating an aura of ocean blue light, created by a black box hanging from the roof.

‘Hello Augustine Yvette Soto! Welcome to the dome,’ the cyborg told her.

‘What do I have to do then? My or-’ said August, before being interrupted.

‘I am O.C.A.S.P, Oaklin College Automated Systematic Program, and I am your trainer for today! You have three different areas for your exam, all compacted into a data wave,’ Ocasp said.

‘You mean a hologram?’ August questioned and Ocasp nodded.

‘Test 1: Fighting!’ In an instant, Ocasp was sucked into the projector, on time with the blue light flooding into the dome like a tsunami. It was now a train station.

A blue screen hovered above her, like a moth.

Take a weapon from behind you, and take out all 20 soldiers and rescue the hostage. There is a timer on the left of your screen which will start when you take a weapon off the wall. On the top right is how many soldiers are left. Good luck!

August looked at the wall and took off a pair of metal knuckles. The screen went out of view, only showing 20/20 in the top right and 4:55 in the top left. 4 soldiers came at her, wearing black tracksuits and wielding batons, except one, who carried… a grenade and a gun. August ducked behind a pillar and dodged a shot, before spinning around and punching a baton one. A crack was heard and they fell to the ground, and August blocked a shot with the helmet the soldier was wearing. Then… the one with gun threw the grenade.

The Tests - Aubri Morsak

Aubri was early, because she could be. She had gotten hold of a form from a kid who looked about 14, wearing bright green and a red hat.

Ocasp appeared on the ground.

‘Hello Aubrianna-’ he told her.

‘I don’t care, just get to the tests,’ Aubri told him.

Ocasp rolled his holographic eyes and disappeared into the projector he was being shot from.

The dome turned into a forest, a somber and overcast cluster of darkened trees covered with cactus green moss crawling across the bark. A wall broke up from the floor behind her, and she turned around, her vision suddenly obscured by a light blue hologram screen.

Take a weapon from behind you, and take out all 20 soldiers and rescue the hostage. There is a timer on the left of your screen which will start when you take a weapon off the wall. On the top right is how many soldiers are left. Good luck!

Aubri instantly took a katana from the wall and the timer beeped to life. A soldier came at her from the trees, and she punched him in the face, cracking his visor and twisting around him to cut his leg, dropping him. 19/20. She grabbed another and twisted their head, buying her time to knee him in the thigh. 18/20. She blocked a bullet with her katana, and rapidly rushed at him, sliding under another bullet and kicking his legs. 17/20. Another soldier alarmed her and threw her back at a tree. Her vision went hazing, and the soldier grabbed a glowing blue baton from his side, raising it.

The Tests - Michael Forantino

Michael rushed in through the door, tired. Ocasp stood there, waiting for him.

‘Hello Michael Christopher Forantino, and welcome to the dome! I am O.C.A.S.P, Oaklin College Automated Systematic Program, and I am your trainer today!’ exclaimed Ocasp, and Michael nodded.

‘3 tests. Writing, coding and fighting. You’ll start with fighting. Good Luck!’ Ocasp disappeared, and the dome morphed into a warehouse, empty and malevolent. A blue screen formed in front of him.

Take a weapon from behind you, and take out all 20 soldiers and rescue the hostage. There is a timer on the left of your screen which will start when you take a weapon off the wall. On the top right is how many soldiers are left. Good luck!

Mikey took a knife from the wall, and as the timer started and the screen disappeared, a soldier rushed at him. Mikey swung, cutting the soldier’s arms, and punched him in the side of the head. He jumped over another guard and stabbed his knife into their arm. He dodged a baton from the 3rd and stabbed him, before kicking him at another incoming soldier.

16/20! Great Job!

The Tests - Lillian Fishan

‘Cut the **** and just tell me what to do!’ shouted Lily at Ocasp.

‘Test 1 is Fighting! Good luck!’ Ocasp disappeared and the dome turned into a huge concrete room, full of soldiers. A blue screen formed on her face.

Take a weapon from behind you, and take out all 20 soldiers and rescue the hostage. There is a timer on the left of your screen which will start when you take a weapon off the wall. On the top right is how many soldiers are left. Good luck!

Lily grabbed a baseball bat and whacked a soldier. She slid under another, pushing him at the ground, and breaking the visors of four more soldiers.

14/20! Amazing!

She jumped on another, whacking his head, and hitting the chest of another. She swivelled and took out three in a row with a swing. She hit one in the leg, dropping him, and got two to headbutt each other. 6 left. She leaped up, throwing her bat and breaking one’s visor, then grabbing it back and whacking two more, before kicking another. 2 left. She kicked one at the wall, and dropped the last one.

Good Job! Now, rescue our hostage!

But… the timer was on 0:30.

The Tests - Sherwin Halligan.

Sherwin put his phone in his pocket and sauntered into the building, right on time.

‘Hello Sherwin Grey Halligan, and welcome to the dome! I am O.C.A.S.P, Oaklin College Automated Systematic Program, and I am your trainer today!’ exclaimed Ocasp.

‘Three tests: coding, writing and fighting. For you, we will start with coding!’ The room transformed into a tiny room, with a computer on the right. It had a black chair, 6 glowing blue screens and a keyboard and mouse. A blue screen popped up in front of him.

Get on the computer and race to disarm the bomb! There are 10 layers of code to break, which will be displayed in the top right of your screen. On the top left is a timer for 5 minutes. Good luck!

The timer started when he sat down, and he immediately started to code. The firewalls were tough, but Sherwin was very experienced. He disarmed 3 firewalls in a minute. The 4th he struggled on, but cracked eventually, then he got two easily, before taking about 40 seconds to break through the 7th. When he cracked it, he broke the last 3.

The Tests - Amber Mason

‘Hi I am Ocasp! Oaklin College Automated Systematic Program!’ exclaimed Ocasp.

‘Hello!’ replied Amber kindly.

‘There are 3 tests. Coding, Writing and Fighting,’ he said, ‘due to your abilities, you will start with: Writing!’

Ocasp disappeared in a blink, and as blue light bathed the dome, it was a small room. A hazel desk sat in the middle, with a piece of paper on it.

Here’s a writing test! You have half an hour, so go!

Amber sat down on the table and answered some questions in detail.

The Students

The huge black dome was filled with tables, white and glistening, It was bigger than the test domes, and each table would fit 9 people. On one table were 9 people.One had long brown hair and pale, smooth skin, with emerald green eyes and about 5’4 tall. Amber Mason. The other had short, messy brown hair that went to his bottom neck, with pale skin and blue eyes. Sherwin Halligan. One had light brown hair, that was short and in a fade, about 6’6 and had brown eyes. Michael Forantino. One had brown hair that faded to orange that went down to their waist, tan skin and brown eyes. Aubrianna Morsak. One had chocolate brown, curly hair that went above her shoulders, tan skin and black eyes. Augustine Soto. One had white-blonde hair in a fringe, pale white skin, and grey eyes. Alexander Silver. One had brown hair fading to purple, down to their back, with pale skin and blue eyes. Lillian Fishan. The last one had purple hair, and was in a green jacket and blue trousers, and black boots. Their skin was tanned and their eyes were brown. Suddenly, all 100 tables had metal trays laid on them, each one with 9 letters laid out perfectly. Each letter had the person’s name they were for written neatly in black curly writing. Amber, Sherwin, Michael, Aubri, August, Alex, Lily and the person with purple hair took their letters and opened them. Amber, Sherwin, Michael, Aubi, August, Alex, and Lily’s letters all said they got in. The purple haired person did not.
Chapter 1

Lily walked through campus, her blue duffel in hand, a suitcase in the other. The campus was lush and green, the grass soft. Multiple paths twisted and writhed through the courtyard. People stood around, chatting. One boy caught her eye. They had purple hair, tan skin, and wore a green jacket. Lily pondered, I thought he didn’t get in… but then dismissed it and walked into the dorm building. There were three separate buildings on campus, each one with a courtyard. First was the main building, which held all the classes, the main hall, the drama theatre and the sports hall, all well furnished. There was also the main dome behind it, the huge black shape. There was also the dorms building, which held… dorms. Some students, those 16-18 lived in houses of 4 each. The 13-15 year olds had to stay in dorms. Oaklin was for those with special abilities, so you had to be 13 to join, but every year you had to pass an exam consisting of 3 tests. The last building was basically just everything else. The cafeteria, a small cafe, a main stall, a tech expo, the school equipment, the testing domes and… the labs. Only campus officials went in the labs, and nobody knew what was in there. The dorms building was the smallest building, but had 4 stories and was about 250ft by 100ft. There were 40 dorms in each floor, so 160 dorms overall, which would fit about 480 people. On each floor were two men and two ladies’ bathrooms.

Lily went to her dorm, on the 3rd floor. Dorm 3F A7, F meaning floor, and A meaning corridor A, as each floor had four corridors each with 10 dorms, on each side, in a plus shape.

She pushed the door open, two people inside already. One was a girl. Lily guessed she was about 5’2, and looked at her chocolate brown hair. Her eyes were strangely black. But, to Lily, that did fit with the pair of illuminated crimson devil horns perched on her head.

The other was a boy, about 6’1, with dark brown hair and piercing blue eyes, with pale skin.

‘Weren’t you at the table in the dome?’ asked Sherwin, taking a bite from a sandwich he had just made, a baguette with cheese, vegetarian ham folded up on top, with tomato, cucumber and lettuce in it.

‘Why do you care?’ yelled Lily, throwing the door shut, her Aussie accent showing.

‘Jeez…’ said August, going into her room. Lily rushed past Sherwin, pushing his shoulder, and wrenching her room’s door open. She put her stuff inside and looked everywhere.

‘Where is the airing cupboard?’ questioned Lily. Sherwin took another bite and pointed to a door next to the bathroom. Lily grabbed a towel from the airing cupboard and pushed the bathroom door open. She got into the shower after undressing, pulling the pink flowery curtains around it, and turned on the hot water. Her phone was set on the sink nearby, when it buzzed. Lily turned off the hot water and exited the shower, drying her hands on the towel. She had gotten a message from somebody called ‘Them’. The message in her hands read:

Meet us at RN34 6PL.

The parking lot outside the mall.

Midnight.

I know you.

I know your intentions. Don’t pretend to hide them from me.

Just because you know, and I know, they’re evil.

-Them.

~~~
Mikey was 18, so he was put in a house. It was apparently holding 3 other people, which he could wait to meet any day. Mikey pushed his light brown hair from his eyes, the brown glistening in the sunlight. His cab stopped outside the house, before driving off. He took his red jacket off, the baking sun forcing him to do it, and got out his key. It was short and golden, the key head looking like Pac-Man on a stick, the end a diamond shape with a circular hole in the apex. Jamming the key into the lock, he twisted it, pushing open the door and taking the key back. A TV was on, quite clearly that new TV show, Qiroshako. On the sofa, staring at the TV was a kid with a scar on his left cheek, and blonde hair in a fringe. They were quite skinny, and was about 7 feet shorter than him. Their pale face turned to look at Mikey, their eyes blue - ish grey. Alex Silver.
‘Hva skjer?’ Mikey said, before coughing. ‘Sorry. What’s up?’
‘Du er norsak?’ asked a person entering from the other room. They had long brown hair with a single white streak, fair skin, deep blue eyes and stood about 6’2, 4 inches shorter than Mikey.
‘Yes. You speak Norwegian?’ replied Mikey.
‘Ja. My grandparents were Norwegian,’ explained the girl with the brown hair. ‘I’m Medusa.’
‘Like the snake woman that turned everyone to stone?’ questioned Mikey quickly.
‘In my culture, names are given to match personalities, so parents must wait about a week to name their child. My parents didn’t like me, just because I was pretty independent, so they named me after the Gorgon Leader,’ Medusa told them. ‘I went to live with my grandparents in Norway when my parents were killed.’
‘Sorry…’ Alex said, rolling his eyes. In a flash, Alex was up against the wall without being touched. Medusa’s hand was splayed, revealing a glowing green spiral, a glowing purple arrow, and a glowing blue X. The spiral disappeared, and Alex was stuck on the wall, before all 3 symbols faded to black and he fell.
‘That’s weird,’ exclaimed a voice from the stairs. Their hair was straight down, the end fading to orange, the rest brown, standing about 5’9, with tan skin and brown eyes.
‘Oh yeah, this is Aubri,’ said Alex, before pressing play on Qiroshako. An identical copy of Aubri walked down the stairs, and the first one faded in a light blue glow.
‘Illusjoner?’ Mikey asked, before again coughing. ‘Illusion?’
‘Yup,’ Aubri said, before walking over and descending on the sofa next to Alex.
‘You’ll be right at home,’ Medusa smiled at Mikey, before retreating to the kitchen to make everyone some food. Alex’s phone buzzed, and he got up, walking into the other room to read the message. It was from ‘Them’.
Meet us at RN34 6PL.
The parking lot outside the mall.
Midnight.
I know you.
I know your intentions. Don’t pretend to hide them from me.
Just because you know, and I know, they’re evil.
-Them.
~~~

Alex stepped onto the concrete path. It was 23:56 on his phone, and he pushed it into his pocket. This was the place he was told to go. It was dark out, and the mall’s lights were turned off. Alex thanked his stars he lived next to Oaklin, which at the time was the best town for superpowered people, out of the 5 towns for supers. Another person was there. Alex could hear their thoughts. Lily stepped up next to him.

‘Empath?’ Alex asked.

Lily nodded. ‘Telepath?’

Alex nodded.

‘You got the message as well, then,’ assumed Alex.

‘Yup. From ‘them’,’ Lily snapped back. A car pulled up into the mall. It was an old Bentley, and a figure stepped out. They wore a long brown coat, a white shirt, black trousers, black boots, a brown hat and gold-rimmed sunglasses. They pushed a strand of blonde hair up into their hat, and looked at them both.

‘Are you Them?’ questioned Lily.

‘I am. Now. I know you both. I know you are villains. You crave power,’ Them said in a deep voice.

‘Of course we do, you idiot,’ Alex snapped.

‘Hush, human,’ the figure snapped back. ‘I have a plan. I need your help. Are you in?’

Alex and Lily though for a second.

In unison, they replied, ‘We’re in.’
