Prologue

Laika woke up. A feeling crawled through her, like she was somebody else. Like she was trapped in another body. She felt cold, metallic. Her hand reached up to her head… and met a web of silver parts all over the left side of her head. She screamed, but her voice met soundproof wall. The room was pitch black, and two icy objects were attached to her wrists, stopping her from reaching further, same with her ankles. Shackles. Her sparkling, crystal blue eyes blinked, shaking her head. Her autophobia and nyctophobia kicked in, scared of being isolated, and scared of the gloominess and darkness inhabiting the room. She couldn’t see if she looked differently, with her long white hair… olive tan skin, as most people called it, speckled with small freckles. Suddenly, a slimy, cactus green water burst through a hole in the wall, the room filling up. Surprisingly, Laika could breath. Not an atom of the room was unfilled by the liquid, yet she could still breath. A circle in the floor fell down slightly, splitting into 8 segments. Her shackles opened. Laika was sucked out from the room by a current of air, and when she was out, the hole closed.

Mars woke up. They felt… wrong. Just wrong. They was clearly shackled by the hands and ankles. They tried to pull, and failed, of course. Mars decided which personality was best for the situation. The dark tan skinned person with curly blue-ish green hair and two blind-looking eyes transformed… into Marseline. Mars was the two personalities of the body combined, but they were gone for now. It was Marseline’s time to shine. She reached up, placing her hands on her face and feeling some elevated on her face’s left side. A silver web. Robotic. Marseline breathed rapidly, getting very sweaty. A strange water trickled through a hole in the wall. It was green, like a dark cactus, and was all slimy. The trickle turned to a burst, and the liquid flooded everything, still enabling them to breath. Mechanical creaks stretched through the walls, her shackles opened, and a hole in the floor opened up in 8 segments. Marseline fell through.

Raes woke up. They immediately felt queasy and nauseated. She needed a drink. She tried to ascend, but was pulled down halfway through, whacking her head on the wall. Her eyes turned blurry, her round, dark brown eyes, like dark chocolate. Now she really needed a drink. She wondered why she was pulled down. She felt a chilled metal on her wrists and ankles. Shackles, perhaps. It would explain it. She felt and urge to touch the side of her head, so she did. Her fingertips met icy metal. It felt… mechanical, robotic even. Her shackles opened, which was good, and she leapt up, but a rumble came through the walls, and cactus green slimy sliquid burst from the pipe, immediately inhabiting the room entirely. A hole in the floor opened up, in 8 parts, and Raes fell through it, onto a cold floor.

Leonardo woke up. He looked around, his vision blocked by the darkness around. He noticed metal stuck to his wrists, also his ankles. It was frosty and cold, unsatisfying, like trying to hold your fist against playground bars. His black and blue head got in front of his eyes, so he shook it away. He felt a web of something on his head. Spiderweb? He hoped to God it wasn’t. His hand met metal. It was metallic? That was interesting. There was no warning to the next occurrence. The slimy, cactus green water burst through a hole in the wall, filling the room up. Leo’s shackles slowly broke apart, and he swam to the ceiling, slamming his fist at it. Currents of air pulled him down suddenly through the hole now opening in the floor. He went through, and hit the ground with such force he got knocked out cold.

Ash woke up. He instinctively leapt up, before crashing to the ground by the icy shackles he noticed clutching his ankles stiffly. He reached out, and noticed that something attached to his wrists, too. Icy shackles. He smirked. His friend were playing a prank on him. It was probably Steph. Steph was the guy who would just start a prank war with you the second you became friends with him. Something was on his head. He just felt it. He reached out to his head, his left hand feeling something elevated and rigid. It felt metallic, and robotic. It was bizarre. Could Steph had done that. Slimy, green liquid filled up the room, catching Ash by surprise. He could breath though. Strangely, his shackles split apart, letting him swim forward. A current burst through a hole opening in the floor, pulling Ash down into it.

Charlotte woke up. This was all wrong, every inch of it. She was shackled, the cold metal digging into her wrists and ankles. Distaste washed all over her. She had no idea what was going on here. It was all wrong. A feeling washed over her mind. Her face. It felt… peculiar, and out of place. She placed her hands on her head, the left one finding a metallic web. She shrieked, her hands immediately trying to wrench it off. Pain washed over her, and her head fell back, smashing against the wall. Stars flooded into her eyes. She blinked until they were gone, and looked around. The pitch black covered her vision like a paper bag over her head, but a million times worse. Her shackles detached and she leapt up, clutching her head. A flood of some sort of green liquid surged into the room via a small pipe breaking through the wall to her right. The liquid filled up the entire room and Charlotte went out cold.

Jasper woke up. Nausea, distaste, sickness, you name it, it all filled her up. Her body was stiff, and she could not move it, the exceptions being her limbs. Jasper’s hand and legs writhed, and she instantly noticed something on her wrists. Ankles as well. Something… cold, metallic. Shackles. They had to be. She reached upwards, trying to break them free, but exhaustion showered over her and she fell. But her hands felt something briefly before they slipped away. On the side of her head. She reached up again, and she felt iron. It was very crisp, unpleasant. Before there was anymore time to think about it, green slime burst from a pipe, filling up the room. Before anything could be done, a hole opened up in the wall, and down Jasper went.

The floor that they all hit was strange. Not just because it was covered in the slimy water, but it was a metal that they had never felt. Never seen. And… never heard? The floor had a dull humming sound, paring with the few bright red lights embedded into it. All 7 kids got up. It took a while for their eyes to adjust to the darkness, but one already shouted out.

‘Who are you?’ questioned Leonardo, his brown eyes narrowing. One kid leaned against the wall and coughed.

‘I could ask the same…’ replied a girl from across the room, with wavy black hair hovering over her shoulders, and extremely dark brown eyes.

‘Okay, calm down, maybe we should all introduce ourselves…’ suggested Ash, pushing a strand of his black, thick, neat hair from his eyes.

‘Fine. I’m Leonardo Moonlight, I’m 17.’

‘I’m Ash Jayden Smith, I’m 17.’

‘I’m Raes, I guess. I’m also 17…’

‘I’m… Laika….’

‘I’m Marseline, I’m 18 in 2 months.’

‘I’m Jasper Mercury, I’m 16…’

‘I’m Charlotte Jeister, I’m 17!’

Suddenly, a white light materialized on the wall to their left/right, depending on where they were standing. It was a screen, quite big, filling up half of the wall. A figure formed there. All they could see a white mask, with white armour on the neck and top of its torso, all that was visible.

‘Hello. I am Them. Welcome to Next To Die.’

‘What the hell are you talking about?’ questioned Raes.

‘This is a game. One rule only.’

Kill Or Be Killed.
