WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH CAPSLOCK? WHY DO STAFF SEEM TO HATE IT SO MUCH?

You can have an opinion on whether or not you like capslock, whether you think it's a bit annoying, or don't like the look of it, but it doesn't seem like a valid rule to enforce that other people not use it. Capslock is often used to get other people's attention, especially when asking for help or telling someone something urgent or important.

So why is it a punishable offense? AshlieWhispers told me it "floods chat", but the size of your text doesn't change. just the individual letters are capitalized. They stay in the lines the same, they don't increase the size of text bubble, except sideways slightly (but you don't mute for longer messages.)

After AshlieWhispers answered my question, she reminded the chat not to use "CAPS in a full sentence." Obviously I was pushing it, as I was annoyed by the idea that you could be muted for using CAPS, so I said, "DO not USE CAPS IN A FULL SENTENCE!" shortly afterwards (didn't use it in a full sentence :p) and I was warned by Ashlie for disobeying staff. A few minutes later I used it again when asking if anybody needed a particular egg, and was muted by Ashlie for an hour.

I of course don't care about being unmuted- it's only an hour- but I want to hear one good reason that CAPS should is, and should remain, a reasonable, punishable chat offense, other than opinions about about how it makes you feel. Thanks! :D

Alright, well here’s my opinion about it. Capital letters, especially a lot of it, can really clutter chat. You said it yourself, it brings attention to the readers. It tends to flood the chat a lot, and although the size doesn’t change, it will be bigger compared to smallee letters. IF I WRITE MY SENTENCE LIKE THIS, doesn’t it capture the attention of whoever is reading it? Won’t it be the first thing that you see when you read this paragraph, compared to the rest of the writing? You were first punished for ignoring staff, and again you said it yourself— you pushed it.

If you need something, a simple question will do. You don’t have to put it in all caps because surely someone who “needs an egg” will be paying attention to the screen, and your chat is in white text as well. You’ll stand out more. This is just my opinion on it though.

If you feel as if you were wrongly punished, you can make a punishment appeal on it as well.

Its a rule and simply just follow it.

Caps simply just makes chat look messy. Not really flooding the chat in a direct way yet a indirect way you get me? As well its useless using caps unless your trying to be funny or something I would get it yet for trying to find a egg you have 6 days for the event I am sure you can find those eggs in 6 day unless you only have a limited time amont then I am sorry for that yet its just how it is.

For example
HELLO
my name is bob
H oH9o H Y wlw
YAUI

Or simply
Hello
Yes
I like your shirt today

It looks nicer and easier to go along without making chat look all weird and messy.

I understand what you guys are saying, but I don't think things like "making chat look messy" are a valid reason for punishment. You can think that someone is making a useless message- most of the chat messages are probably as useless as "my name is bob," but there's no rule explicitly against it. There's no rule against making useless messages (unless, obviously, it's spam) and I don't one should arbitrarily apply to using too many capital letters. It's senseless to draw the line at caps letters, but messages like "i like turtles," which are far more "messy" and "chat cluttering" than using capital letters.

Using capital letters is the same as using lowercase letters, except with it has some other intended purpose, for emphasis, urgency, or to draw attention to something important.

There's nothing wrong with feeling that it is as "messy" as the other messages TimeLord showed, which, besides the obvious spam that TimeLord threw in for some reason ("H oH9o H Y wlw" is on the same level as "my name is bob" and "HELLO"?) If you feel that it is messy, that go ahead and make rules against any useless, messy, or cluttering chat messages and allow staff to mute people anytime they feel it violates that. If it was enforced as stated, then half of the chat messages would be punishable. There are all sorts of reasons you might dislike people CAPS in chat, but it's all subjective.

How is "HELLO" not okay like TimeLord said, but "Hello" is fine? What vendetta do people have against capitals? Obviously they don't look as professional or academic as using exactly proper grammar, but there's not other rules against using incorrect grammar (besides spamming/ character spamming, obviously). This isn't english class, this is an informal chat on a minecraft server that has mostly children and teens. Staff don't need to be punishing people for using capital letters instead of lowercase letters, this is ridiculous people.

Some times when staff are trying to get everyone to calm down for an event or something, and one person is just spamming stuff like "I LIKE MAYO ON PIZZA!" or random useless info. It can be very distracting and just a general nuisance to anyone who might just be reading chat in a Hub/Game.

Just something I'd like to add onto this topic

If staff tell you to stop, then you probably should in the moment. If you have a problem with it, suggestions are a thing. If you ignore that request, then it most likely ends up in a warn or mute.

Okay. Lets compare chat to a real life scenario.

First lets talk about chat:

So everyone is just having a conversation with normal capitalization used. Then suddenly
"HEY WHO KNOWS WHERE A GOLDEN EGG IS?!"
Capital letters end up coming off as aggressive or as shouting when used excessively.

So lets take this to a more real scenario.
It's a good night at a fancy restaurant, and everything is great.
You're sitting at a table with your friends having a nice conversation. Then suddenly
Someone gets up from the table next to you, and starts shouting "WHERE'S MY FOOD," going on a huge rant filled with shouting for a long time.

The real point is, when a user has an excessive amount of capital letters in chat, it comes off as aggressive and is generally unpleasant, which is why staff asks users to not continually fill chat with messages containing excessive capitalization.

This then can turn into a warn as Kannafye says if not followed.

That can really be said about any rule argument and I agree to that yet it is their rules as well when trying to manage chat it can be very difficult.

:/ just because someone doesn't do as they are told they should be instantly warn or muted. Sorry but thats just unstaff like. You folks act too quick, judge too quick and your punishments go from eh who cares to wth I got perm banned just because I did a unusual thing. I never like that part of the server expecially the staff some are about ego some have hidden dark sides and some are just A o k. Never liked staff or the rules and how overly stricked they were mostly in the quick advancements department.

I'm not going to get into this argument about caps, but you just gave the perfect example of the one thing about the PZ staff team that makes me so angry.

The player who created this thread is asking about the roots of the rule, the reason for the punishment. Then, you come and just say "obey staff or you'll be punished." That's not a helpful answer to the question.

Exactly! I was muted on Discord yesterday (by a full PartyZone moderator, mind you) in a completely senseless manner. No rules were being broken in the "argument" (it was really a conversation) and yet we were being forced to drop the topic with no explanation. I started asking why we needed to drop the topic, and I got muted. After I said that I would stop talking.

In general, I kind of feel like the staff around here take things too seriously and jump to quick conclusions. They also keep telling us to drop topics (sometimes rules aren't even being broken) with no explanation as to why we have to drop it in the first place. I don't particularly like obeying people who are in the "obey me because I'm higher up on the authority pyramid" mentality; instead, I prefer true leaders, ones who are always willing to stop everything, hear both sides of a story, and make sure everyone understands why the next action will be taken.

Okay, that's my small novel for the day. :sorry:

For stuff like this, it’s a verbal warn first. If you ignore us, it becomes a warn. After that it is a mute. I gave someone two chances for it. After the verbal warn, and after the warn. If you choose not to listen then you will get muted. If you listen in the moment, you could suggest it later, instead of when you have a chance to be punished.

O ok your statement wasn't clear :p. As well its not always like that I have a lot of hate from the staff team but hey who wouldn't hate me. As well different staff different opinions and takings.

Still I stand by my opinion. I was perm banned for that one unusual thing that might appear to be xray yet its just the dumbest thing and it was just one evidence video at one scene. Like I will never get over that. Still I have seen many things through these 3.2 kinda years I do not wish to spill but yea. Some might be false rumors and some I know are true even if I don't want them to be.

Also like I said low punishment to extremely high punishment. Just insane. For example teaming such a low punshment I reported someone in 3 different times and they never were perm banned like me. I am just shook.

Oh yea can we drop the topic so we or just me don't get punished for being off topic.

Regarding the caps, I'm pretty sure that it's just too distracting. I wouldn't say it floods the chat, but it more or less brings a lot of attention to the message in caps while staff are trying to moderate and players are having discussions.

I'm not taking sides here, but I do know of several staff members who are/were just in it for the authority and/or popularity among other things. I've also known staff who just flaunt their authority about and in doing that, act completely unhelpful to the network and its playerbase. I suppose it can be said that staff can be too quick to judge and are strict, but they are told what to do so I wouldn't necessarily blame the individual.

Partyzone does it's best to keep the staff who actually benefit the server and who are seen doing their best for the wellbeing of the network. I'm not aware of too many staff members around that happen to not be doing their job so I can tell you Partyzone is doing what I'd say is a remarkable job at keeping staff who put the network before any personal gains.

Another thing: I know I just sorta did this, but lets at least try to keep this thread on topic and not criticize staff?
