I haven't seen any questions like this so please forgive me if there is a question like this already but is it possible to recommend something we built as a map or would we have to apply for builder?

I'm pretty sure there's a section for map submissions, where you can submit a map that you have built, but builder applications are now closed.
[EDIT] can't seem to find the map submissions section any more, you could maybe PM an admin to take a look at your map if you definitely think it's worthwhile.
