Does In-Game VIP differ from In-Forum VIP? I had a VIP rank In-Game before I registered with the new forums...

No, but to get your rank on the forums you need to link your minecraft account and your forum account. To do this you need to type /link <email that you used on the forums> in one of the in-game lobbies
