If you don't mind a decent amount of gore, the first season of Tokyo Ghoul is pretty good with a decent message.
Past season two, however it just becomes: "WONDER, THINGS, EXCITEMENT"

My favourite is Naruto, I started watching from toddler-hood
The best in terms of quality tho are Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works], Fate/Zero, and Your Lie in April. Honourable mentions are Kara no Kyoukai and Inuyasha.
btw i didnt put death note or tokyo ghoul b/c I havent watched them and won't for a long while

Btw, that is an amazing list!
Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra aren't really considered anime, I think. But they were really excellent shows. My favorite characters were Toph, Sokka, and Iroh in ATLA, and Bolin, Korra, and Meelo in LOK.
