-\- Episode One -/-

Rose quickly shut the front door behind her, doing her best to keep the cold air out of the house.

"Mom, I'm home!" she called.

Receiving no answer, Rose strode into the living room to find a small girl sitting on the couch, staring at the television set in front of her.

"Lily," Rose called, "where's Mom?"
Lily shrugged without tearing her gaze away from the screen.

"But she's home, right, Lily?"

"Yeah."

Rose turned to walk away, but she was curious to know what Lily was watching.

"Lily, what are you watching?" Rose inquired as she returned to the back of the couch.

"The news."

"Does Mom know you're watching this?"

Lily shrugged again. Rose sighed and rolled her eyes. Lily was a good little sister, but her curiosity often got the better of her. Rose looked down at Lily. She seemed to have sat down on the couch the second she got home from school; she was still wearing her backpack, and she hadn't removed her shoes yet.

"For those of you tuning in now," the news reporter on the television said, "we ask that you remain calm and listen to the following message carefully.

"A young boy was found dead beside the street in Stoneway this morning. It seems he was killed by an animal; his body has been torn in many places. Even his face is almost unrecognizable."

An image of the boy before he was killed appeared on the screen. He appeared to be around ten years old.

"The young boy's parents said he was taking his dog out for a walk last night," the reporter stated, "and that he didn't come back. They searched for him, but they were unable to find him due to the extremely thick fog that consumes Stoneway nearly every night."
"That's not far from here," Rose said. "Lily, go find Mom, please. Tell her I'm home."

Lily slid off the couch and ran out of the room at top speed. Rose was unable to contain her curiosity any longer; she sat down on the couch and gazed at the glowing screen.

"There have been four of these such attacks so far in the four-county area. Each one has been attacked by what seems to be a large and powerful animal. Only the young boy from Stoneway has died. The other three have been hospitalized, and their health is declining rapidly. Medical professionals are unsure of the cause of this."

"This is terrible," Rose mumbled. "What could have killed that kid?"

"We now ask that each of you follow these important safety measures to ensure that you do not become a victim of these strange attacks," the reporter said. "Always close and lock all windows and doors when they are not being used. Avoid being outdoors alone, and do not go outside at night. We do not know if the source of these attacks is nocturnal; we understand nothing about it other than that it is powerful and dangerous."

Rose stood up and glanced around. Fear was sinking in; she could feel that she was in danger. She quickly turned the television off and dashed out of the room.

"Mom, please," Rose begged, "we need to get downstairs. It's night, and something's going on in the area."

"What kind of something, dear?"

"Something weird," Rose replied quickly. "Haven't you seen the news? A kid got killed in Stoneway."

"Someone was killed?" Elizabeth inquired.

"Yes, and more people have been attacked." Rose sighed. "Mom, it's not safe. The reporter said night is the most dangerous time around here. We need to get into the basement."

"Rose, isn't this a bit drastic?" Elizabeth whispered.

"No, Mom. Whatever killed the kid in Stoneway is powerful... and dangerous. We need to spend the night in the basement. Please, Mom, we need to."

Elizabeth shifted her weight and looked up at the ceiling. She always had a habit of looking up while she was thinking.

"Okay. I'll get some food in case we get hungry. Rose, dear, get some water bottles out of the closet, please."

Rose strode out of the kitchen and opened the hallway closet. She took as many bottles of water as her backpack could hold - after removing all of those useless high school textbooks, of course.

After returning to the kitchen, Rose found that Elizabeth had already gathered enough food and had made sure Lily was prepared.

"Are you ready, Rose?" Elizabeth called.

"Yeah, Mom. Go ahead and go downstairs; I'll write a note for Dad."

"Okay, dear. Hurry, though. We'll be waiting for you downstairs."

Rose heard the basement door creak open. Rose had never liked the basement - she was terrified of it as a child. She had overcome her fear of it when becoming a teenager, but she still didn't quite like it. It was quite an unsettling place.

Rose picked up the nearest pencil and scribbled a quick note to her father.

Dad,

Mom, Lily and I are in the basement. We saw the news report today and we're going to spend the night downstairs. We already brought supplies down. If you're reading this, please come down as soon as you can. We'll wait for you.

-Rose

Rose sighed and placed the note on the refrigerator door - Rose knew that's where her father always went when he got back home from work. She stepped back and read it over one more time, and after approving it, she crept out of the kitchen to go to the basement. She heard something from her left, and she spun to look at the source.

The front door stood wide open.

A beast loomed above Rose. Its fangs reflected the light coming from the kitchen. Rose screamed and attempted to turn around, but the beast was too quick for her; it lunged forward and tackled her.

Rose screamed and thrashed her arms and legs, but it was no use; the creature bent down for an attack. Rose moved her arm in the way and suddenly felt a terrible, searing pain. Screaming in agony, she squirmed and wrenched her arm out of the beast's mouth. Her own blood stained the creature's face; it dripped on her face, but she did not care; her arm felt dead.

She screamed in terror as the beast rose for another attack; Rose closed her eyes and breathed what she thought would be her last. The creature's head dashed downward, and a loud bang broke what would have soon been complete silence.

Rose felt the massive body collapse on top of her; she could not breathe. Her eyes remained closed, and she just knew she was dying.

Incredibly, the body was rolled off her chest, and she could breathe; she did not understand what had happened until she opened her eyes and saw the person staring down at her.

"There, there, Rose," the deep voice said. "Are you alright, my dear?"
