This is because the Sun does not orbit a larger single object. The Sun converts mass into energy and emits light (planets are too small to do that).
The Sun is the largest object in a huge amount of space, there is nothing close enough to affect it by its gravitational pull because of the distance between the Sun and the nearest large object (another star) is very large.

The Sun does travel around the galaxy. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, contains about 300 000 000 000 (three hundred billion) stars and the Sun's orbit takes about 200 000 000 (two hundred million) years.
The sun is an object that emits its own light, which is produced via nuclear fusion. It therefore meets the definition of a star.
