They didnt get rid of Java. I use the Java version of minecraft and its the first version to be updated before all the others. The main issue that people have is RAM, minecraft isnt very cpu intensive but it uses a decent amount of RAM.
While I believe you on the RAM, I distinctly remember around 1.8 the old launcher had me update to a new one because they wouldn't be supporting Java in the later updates, which is also why my sister couldn't go past 1.8, because her old PC was too old to play the new Minecraft.
Whether or not they stuck with that between then and being sold to Microsoft is unbeknownst to me, but at one point they certainly did intend to do away with their Java.

The newer launcher just contains Java packaged into it if I recall so you can run it without needing Java installed. I think they're renaming PC Minecraft to be Minecraft: Java Edition so they're definitely staying with it albeit they kinda hate us and are pushing Windows 10 + Pocket Editions cross platform cooler Minecraft to everyone because they can make more money there.

*that* version doesn't use Java (which is why it's difficult for us to simply switch over to that new and growing platform; all of our network plugin infrastructure and server software is written in and for Java).

Oh I see, thanks for clearing that up!
