1.8 vs 1.9+ Discussion

PvP in later versions than 1.8 is a joke. It even got harmed a bit from 1.7-1.8 in that sprinting and hitting changes were made, and hit registration just feels totally different.
Not to mention, many servers that still support 1.7 are factions, and that's because Microsoft utterly borked tnt cannoning after 1.7. I know that's not relevant to here, but it's worth noting.
Downgrade would absolutely be harmed by upgrading the version, because it's not purely about swords but rather the hit cooldown and annoying screen animation when your weapon is "charging" plus there's the whole "sweeping blade" thing and shields instead of blocking which visually wise is quite annoying.
That being said, I doubt anyone really cares if downgrade is harmed or even deleted, given that it's player count is so low I'm shocked the admins haven't nuked it like with SG, Skywars, Massacre, etc, and just called it "too buggy" and "low priority"

SG was nuked because of actual bugs, it's the only one that follows the standards.
Skywars was removed because it was pretty much a hive for fly hackers, I got at least 20 one day.
Massacre was nuked because the gameplay is imbalanced.
DG probably won't be removed because it's one of our original games, and it doesn't actually have any problems, and as long as it doesn't, it's ok to sit there doing nothing anyways.

I actually don't quite care about the hitting thing, it makes it a bit harder to aim, that's all I dislike.
I've always been good at timing though.

Also it won't affect DG that much since the damages for most of the weapons are set based on tier, and not the weapon. (One-Hit Sword, for example).
For the few that aren't set based on tier, they can do so.
It'd be a simple fix.

Downgrade actually doesn't feel any different, the timing is the same. I just play.

If you're asking why the entire MC player-base prefers 1.8 then I can't help you there.

But I'm guessing you're asking why the PZ players prefer 1.8. I can indeed help you there.
I'm just going to leave a link to another thread here.
You have read that thread and I do believe that answers the reason why we, as the PZ community, use that specific version.

If my answer isn't the one you're looking for then I probably misunderstood the thread. I apologize if I did.

Doesn't really give me an answer lol, just says that people like 1.8.
kind of like tyler joseph's song writing

Hit registration is wildly different between the versions. It's something you only notice if you're often comboing your opponents, and/or spend a lot of time actually pvping on real pvp servers.

What I was trying to say is most people prefer 1.8 due to their favourite servers using that version. If larger servers (who have an average of 2000-3000+ players online) changed their version, then of course, their player-base would to. But PartyZone (who has an average of 200-300 players) can't do that, since our player-base usually play on other big servers too. So basically the version a lot of players use depends on what version larger servers run on. Again, sorry if I'm not helping.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting it, but this is probably because you're not on a 1.10+ server. With everyone else on a 1.8 game client, and you being on the latest version, the game won't make you play differently because of this. The cool down bar still shows up, but it has zero effect. You can still spam click on a 1.10 client, in a 1.8 server and it'll be effective. If you were playing on the latest version, though, you would certainly feel the effects. Such as everything taking much longer to kill.

it's ok to sit there doing nothing anyways.
To address this, as well, I see your point in the rest of your message but this phrase actually makes me laugh. Having something sit there and do nothing just takes up more RAM that the server needs to put towards an idle game that nobody plays. It's better to replace it with a game that will have high traction for a while, such as the classics (Sky wars, survival games). Either way, I don't see Downgrade being removed any time soon, but saying that it's fine having it sit there and serve no purpose is completely false.

I didn't say let it sit there and eat up money.
Downgrade (haha) the ram to the minimum amount for functionality in that game, if needed.
Not to mention it does serve a purpose to leave it up, PR wise.
Having it up leaves it as an option for those who do play it.
Also, that's what it does most of the time.

I guess I'm just completely oblivious to that; honestly everything doesn't feel different for me

Right now I use 1.12 yet I prefer 1.8 over everything.
With 1.8 you get pvp resource packs, a lot of servers, better pvp understanding, and a lot of servers are on 1.8.

With 1.12 you get the latest stuff yet pretty much that.

The only reason I prefer 1.12 is because it seems my knives throw faster in 1.12 when I click them.

Honestly I wish there was a compromise. Is there some mod that lets me have a 1.8 experience on 1.12? The 1.8. wool textures hurt my eyes.

You could get a resource pack just for wool. And over lap(put it on top) that one with your current resource pack or the default. There is a way to make a 1.8 experance yet what is the point of updating then? As well forcing players to update for really nothing new.

If it's the textures you're worried about, then look up how to make a resource pack or just find one that you like. The server isn't going to change just for you and the fact that wool hurts your eyes. To get a 1.8 experience on a 1.12 client, join a 1.8 server or downgrade your game. It isn't hard.

Hey! I understand what you're saying about the whole updating the versions and all, but in some views you got to understand that some players much prefer 1.8 over the other versions, It's not just the whole pvp experience but you could also think about minor differences like settings, mods, operating systems and those kinda things. I'm not on any side about this.
Personally I like both versions- I prefer 1.12.1 for building and then I use 1.8 more for pvp base games.
I'm not disagreeing with you about getting players to update and use there newer and improve minecraft mechanics but they're a few things which make a huge influence into why some players don't use the newer versions.

The only good thing about anything from 1.9 onwards are the new blocks as PrisonBop has mentioned the combat is shocking, i for one always use 1.8.9.
Also SG was taken down because it inefficient, skywars was taken down not because of hackers but because of it being riddled with lots of small bugs that caused it to be unstable, Massacre hasnt been nuked, not enough people were playing it since it requires huge numbers so it is available to be used on streams or special events, downgrade is just what it is really.

After actually reading from start to finish in this thread it seems that people think that we can just push a button and make creative work on 1.9 and above, this is not the case its a server yes but it is a custom plugin that uses our own systems and libraries. All of those would need to be updated to allow the entire network to move to a version higher than 1.8. But 1/3 of our player base still use 1.8 not just because of combat issues etc but that they are unable to run any higher versions. Until we have more developers and less players using 1.8 our hands are sort of tied, unless we want to lose 1/3 of the playerbase which also includes some of the staff.

thanks for your input since i don't know anything really about how this works.
could you or someone else pls elaborate on how people are unable to run on higher versions?

They didnt get rid of Java. I use the Java version of minecraft and its the first version to be updated before all the others. The main issue that people have is RAM, minecraft isnt very cpu intensive but it uses a decent amount of RAM.
