Hey, so a surprising amount of people noticed I've been listening to very different music lately, mainly by Au/Ra. And they've asked me "what happened to your dubstep?" Or "are you going back to acoustic music?"
I'm not completely ditching EDM. It's already formed a place in my heart, and in my mind as I produce my own EDM tracks. I can't ever let go of it.
Now, the new music. I've recently realised that I don't like songs that are all about the same thing. Almost every song I hear in ads or friends talk about is either heartbreak, money, or other worthless things.
I want to listen to music with meaning. That's why I listen to Au/Ra, and why she's my favourite singer. She doesn't sing about heartbreak. She sings about loneliness. Depression. Everything I feel is a real presence, not a story of how a guy dumped you via text. I like listening about being unable to control your thoughts and fears. How people can be judged because of who they are, and what they are. REAL problems. REAL issues. It's a complete waste of effort to sing about the same thing over and over again, when you can sing about something people can relate to.
But the main reason I love Au/Ra is because she's only 16. Only two years above me. That's pure, raw and young talent. She's inspired me to sing, and I love singing. I sing Au/Ra songs all day, every day.
I'm not saying that generic music is bad. Everyone is inclined to their opinion. And I'm inclined to the opinion that songs about not feelings of the heart, but of the mind, of sanity, they have the most meaning.
