General /history

Remember when players couldn't change their ign, now that was fun. I miss when I could change my name and no one knew and I told only the people I liked and wanted to be around.
I would prefer no one had the power at their fingertips to look up my old usernames (btw mine were super cheesy yw). Sometimes it is better not to do than to do like nukes it might save millions of people but their are back fires for that. Anyways back on point the good side is that you can look up anyone at your fingertips but the cons is that someone can look up yourself and simply put old enemies. I had many enemies I wish I could forget or that never happened. I am sure there is a good reason it wasn't made public as well. Maybe to keep it secret or what not, but my point here as well is if it wasn't orginally made public there has to be a reason for that or just simply it was made for staff use and the public wasn't thought about.

Anyways to my good saying its better not to do than to do in many situations. Thats why im saying no. Its not a needed feature as its always implemented just takes 3 extra simple steps. Staff use this command to look up past offenders and make sure they are punished based on their past or what ever they use this command for bugs or the common look about. And lastly it could start chaos, simple things usually start chaos and lead to bigger things.

anyways this is just my opinion so yeeaaa it long

Hmm maybe only be able to do it for people on our friends list, or ourselves? cos people could use this to find new areas that someone may play and use it to their advantage to harass the user possibly? idk but i can see people finding ways to ruin this.

I personally don't see why players can't use /history as we are already able to view everyone's past in-game names on NameMC. Giving everyone the command will only save us time since, from what I've seen, some of us are too lazy to search for the specific player's username. The command is basically just a "shortcut" to NameMC. I do understand that some people may think, "it's a staff command for a reason" and I totally understand why it is a staff command, but just like the ranked perks that were recently released, having 10+ plots, coloured signs and merged plots, all of those perks were originally a staff perk. So why can't the /history command also be usable for the public? What damage would it bring if we (non-staff members) do happen to have the ability to use /history? The command doesn't show you a list of punishments the player has received, nor does it leak any staff information. It only shows you the player's previous in-game names, and we are already able to do so, (like I said) via NameMC. So there isn't really something to hide if we are able to use the command.

Websites like NameMc are recording our database it's enough
This is just false. Mojang hold a public record of everyone's username history through their API, NameMC is just a tool to access it. So is the /history command. Neither requires permission to do so as it is intended to be public.

So i feel like really it should stay as a staff command
Down voting a player suggestion just because the suggestion is not currently implemented (having /history for all) is not an actually meaningful reason to go against it. No staff-only data is accessed through the command. Likewise, if a player suggested adding SkyWars, voting no because "we don't have SkyWars" makes no sense. It is called a suggestion for a reason afterall.

if this were to happen it should be available to everyone.
The suggestion didn't mention anything about it only being for certain ranks if it was implemented. The group used was "us members" (everyone).

To my knowledge, the command has no staff-only data and is purely for seeing what a player's names were and the date they were changed. Yes, the command can be used as a tool for staff, it can also be used as a tool for players. The usage of the outcome of the command is not a reason to not give it to players. NameMC has all this already, and if people want this, then I don't see why not?

Hmm how about this if implemented the player can have the option to show their past usernames unless a staff looks it up?

Players should have the option to allow others to see their stuff. Just like their rank if they don't want to show it then they shouldn't have to.

being a littler harsh there my dude, could of put it in a nicer way.

Ethetical and political reasons sometimes apply but here ethical, everybody should have their own privacy even if its already avaliable through other means.

What's the point in hiding your previous usernames if someone can just search it up on other sites? Hiding your previous usernames on PZ, won't stop people from finding out your past usernames.

whats the point of adding this command to everyone else if they can already do this? As well privacy as stated in the post... I like my things private and I am sure others do too.

Just saying privacy is a needed thing. If someone wanted to hurt me or anything and finding my location was easy to get. I am sure I wouldn't wanna play online. All I am saying here is that privacy comes first.

It’s not like namemc or the command will show where you live? I don’t understand why you’re so concerned to be exposed when it’s basically just only your usernames that’s showing.

It was a example not a thing that would happen to clarify.

If someone wanted to hurt me and wanted to know who I was or am Player speaking, all they would have to do is look up my name and bam they can track me down and rip my world apart. People are sadly crule and evil and I know a few who would love to hurt me.

Again privacy is a nice thing.

It literally already exists and you seem to be alive still so I don't see the problem?

I'm not being harsh, just removed the sugarcoating in order for extra clarity as we've been going back and forth on the same points when it's quite simple to get to grips with. There's no need to take suggestions and debate personal.

Making something private to access of information that is publicly available is unnecessary censorship and makes the tool less useful than what it is as Mojang themselves allow you to look up anyone's name history from their servers. If they wanted it to be private to access, you wouldn't be able to do so. Many of websites, including NameMC which has 1 billion views already, have this feature even more accessible.

In the case of ethics: Transparency (name history) isn't at all unethical. Hiding something transparent by an extra layer (permission request) would be.

all they would have to do is look up my name
This is already possible regardless of whether the command can be used by everyone, as there are many other websites and tools to look up your history. If people wanted to do it, they would have already done so.

If it's that much of a problem, people get alternative Minecraft accounts entirely to solve situations like this where they don't want their transition to be public. Your own personal history isn't a reason, that affects the whole community, to not support something people clearly want made available for ease of access on the network.

t;dr = Direct your privacy concerns to Mojang who set the rules on it.

I'd like to start by saying I conform to this idea. Not only does it give players convenient accessibility to past usernames, but it also can assist players who may not remember a player, or help someone to recognize a player after a name change.

Both NameMC and /history are basically the same thing- tools that act as a convenience when searching for a player. The only difference is that if this was implemented into the server for all players to have access to, that would mean it would be facile and less complicated to go through the hassle of going to NameMC. Regardless if a player is lazy or not, the point remains that it is more convenient than going through NameMC. Even if players had access, it doesn't give them any more of an advantage than being a staff member with the command.

Though, if this was implemented, I'd assume some players would disagree. Some players may feel uncomfortable, for whatever reason, and I feel like there should be a way players can toggle the accessibility to their previous names- even IF it's available on NameMC.

I'm completely open to other opinions, but for the reasons above and my own, I will be agreeing. +1

Just going to point it out but was it really nessacary to spam I disagree on all my posts... like come on 1 notification is enough

Just being nice is a good and nice way even if the intent is to give details and disagree. At least thats my opinion what what evers. I know that its the same as namemc and its soo easy to implement.

Still my opinion, I don't wish to have this implemented ethics or not. I rather not have someone being able to know my name at their fingertips. I generally don't feel like its a good idea. I don't wish to post anymore I am a bit tiresome of this battle. Pm me if you wish but please just leave my opinion to my opinion.

Let's set the line
- Anybody will find out your username whether it's using NameMC, or another Username History website. -
Also, I'd like to point out what @Etgar said which I hadn't realized myself..
but just like the ranked perks that were recently released, having 10+ plots, coloured signs and merged plots, all of those perks were originally a staff perk.
Now I can finally answer this "it's a staff command for a reason" thing going around here.
Also @unstinc thanks for researching, and somewhat agreeing with my idea? Idrk but whatever, haha.

Kinda started it, but oh well, lol.

t was it really nessacary to spam I disagree
You made individual comments each time that I disagreed with. The rating is there to be used, but that's a suggestion for another day! It's just a little 16x16 pixels raincloud and there's no need to be upset as I'm disagreeing with the content of the post and not you as a person. <3

and somewhat agreeing with my idea?
I do agree with you big boy!

I vote +1 bing bing bong.
