Hi I was wondering if anyone has the Wacom tablet and is it worth getting? I enjoy drawing and art but want to start doing it digitally. Thanks!
Thank you sooo much this helps a lot! I'm totally gonna get one soonThe short answer is yes, conditionally.
Here's the long answer: If you know you'll use it often and have fun with it, then it'll be worth your money. Each Wacom Intuos tablet comes with a permanent license to an art software. The one I bought came with Corel Painter Essentials 5.
The one I bought, the Intuos Art (I think) Medium, was $200; I've had it for almost a year and I love it. In fact, I use it to design profile banners for this very website. I'm realizing, however, that I probably didn't need the Medium, and I would have done just fine with a Small, which is only $100.
If you buy one, MAKE SURE you know EXACTLY which art software you're going to get. If it comes with one you don't like, try a different one.
The Intuos tablets don't have a screen, which means they hook up to your computer and you need to look at your monitor while you draw. Some of their other tablets do have screens, but they're much more expensive.
One thing you NEED to know before buying it (something I didn't) is the pen tips. Yes, the tablet comes with a pen and tips for it. Extras can be found in the back of the tablet. However, after using the pen for a while, the tip will begin to shave down, kind of like a pencil. You shouldn't keep using the tip if it gets a sharp point like that.
I found a solution on YouTube, though: if you buy electric trimmer line (.065"/1.65mm, the blue, round kind) and sandpaper (don't worry, these things are pretty cheap), you can make your own pen tips that fit inside the pen. Just use scissors to cut a tip (make sure it's long enough to go inside the pen and still stick out the end. DON'T GET ANY TRIMMER LINE STUCK INSIDE THE PEN.), then sand the tip so it's rounded. Then, once it gets sharp, sand it down again. One roll of trimmer line will last far longer than you'll need it to. Get a small roll. (You might be voiding your warranty by doing this, but I'm not really sure. It's worked fine for me all this time.)
You'll also need to periodically clean your tablet with an antistatic cloth (I'm sure you have one around your house somewhere). This just helps it to perform better.
I know I just gave a huge speech. You probably didn't read all of that. But if you did, congratulations. You now know pretty much everything you need to know to have a Wacom tablet. Most of what I said was based on my experience in using a Wacom Intuos tablet. Some of the other models might give different results.
So basically, after all of that... if you know you'll use it and you know you can afford to either buy electric trimmer line or more pen tips (buy the trimmer line. It'll save you SO much money.), then I'd say yes, it's worth it.
I hope that helped.![]()
