I logged into the forums to find I'd been tagged a half-dozen times by people I didn't know in the slightest. Looking into the thread, it was a "forum game" where a person tagged three people they wanted to hug, shove, and marry. The issue with the forum game was that it required each person who played to tag an additional three people for the next person to play the game with.

It's spammy, and goes "viral" rapidly, because if even half of the people in the tag participate, it's perpetuated ad infinitum

My suggestion is to add a rule that forbids these types of chain-tag games (the game would work just fine if each player chose three people to "hug, shove, or marry" without the additional three tags for the next player)
or give us an option to disable notifications from certain forum areas, such as "forum games", which many of us will never participate in.
Alternatively, you can limit the number of tags that can be in a certain thread, but that might cause issues with other threads that're less spammy, so I don't know about that

edit: depicted is the spammy plague of chain tags. jesus christ.

NO need to make this Suggestion; There is an Unwatch Thread option on the top of the Forum Thread! -1

I got four notifications for the thread within two days before I logged in. It spams notifications *before* you've actually posted onto the thread, so you shouldn't auto-watch, and the "thread" is only popular because it forces players to spam others, which should be categorized as inciting spam and intentionally annoying other users.
The unwatch thread feature isn't useful when it sends many many notifications that're useless before a user may log on for the first time in a couple days.

You can change your alert preferences here if you don't want to be notified of mentions: https://mcpz.net/account/alert-preferences
This way you will only receive notifications of threads you watch so you only get the feed you want.

As for adding this as a Global Forum Rule I don't think that is such a good idea as forum games like this are very popular. However, I think that limiting the amount of notifications a thread can send you about this is a good idea. We already do that with Watched Thread notifications, you have to check the notification before it will send you more :p

+1 for limiting the notifications per batch :D

The thing is, someone tagging you automatically adds it to your watched threads, even if you haven't commented on it
There's no way to prevent that from happening, so the only way to do it in preferences would be to disable all mentions, which is too blunt given that most tags aren't spammy.
The forum game is only popular because it forces people to tag three others in a chain. It's like those "share this or bloody mary will come to you tomorrow night" the only reason it gets spread is silly people who're superstitious.
I didn't think of limiting the notifications per thread though, solid idea.

I still don't think banning them altogether is completely necessary. Maybe just edits to the system do it's not as annoying for people who don't enjoy that type of game :p

If you don't want to be tagged on a forum game then just turn off notifications, I think many people like the forum games; thats why the staff team added them. :)

Notifications are useful for literally every other thread I'm involved in. not some game that I didn't want to participate in that's now spamming my feed

I still am a -1, as BirdsAndTea said, the staff put the tab "Forum Games" there for a reason. There is an option to turn off notifications.
