Yoru rummaged through the pile of mess, searching for something he could feast on. It was quite hard finding any sort of meal in a broken city, but he had to give it a try, otherwise he would starve to death.
After what seemed like hours of looking through the littered pavement of the once grand city, Yoru's sensitive ears finally picked up a scuttling sound. They flicked towards his right, and he turned with them to see a rat scavenging through the remains of a trash pile a few fox-lengths away from him. Yoru slowly dropped into a hunting crouch, stalking up to the rodent, which was unaware of his presence. With a mighty leap, he pinned the rodent and gave it a sharp nip on the spine, ending its life instantly. Just as Yoru was about to dig in, his nose picked up something sour. He took a bigger whiff and realized it was coming from the rat itself.
Mouse-dung! Yoru thought, frustrated. It must have eaten something rotten. He scowled and whacked it to the side, very displeased. As if on cue, his stomach growled, demanding to be filled. His eyes gave away his hopelessness. How was he going to feed himself? This was the first piece of prey he has found in a while!
All this thinking reminded Yoru of how he missed his first catch, back in the forest. He was much younger, probably 5 moons or so. He was very annoyed since he failed to catch a young mouse that was searching for something unknown to him. His parents would always tell him that he wouldn't always catch a piece of prey and that he would always get better as he got older.
Yoru's parents were lovely cats. His mother, a beautiful calico with green eyes, always encouraged him to try new things and make new friends. His father, a strong black-furred cat with sharp ice-blue eyes, trained him to be nimble, tough, and most importantly, a quick thinker. Yoru had no idea how he would be able to teach himself all of the lessons his father could not.
His thoughts were interrupted by another scuttling sound. He turned to his right and saw a black cat with three blue rings on its tail creeping away. From its lithe form, Yoru guessed it was a she-cat. The cat's eyes widened as she realized she was discovered, and before Yoru could say anything, she darted away.
"Wait!" Yoru called out. "Come back! I didn't mean to startle you!" He started dashing in the direction in where she fled. The she-cat burst into a broken building not far from where Yoru caught that rotten rat. It took a few moments for him to get to the building in question. Once he was there, he leaped into a shattered window which brought him inside. He started to search for the she-cat whom he has accidentally scared.
Yoru's ear made out the sound of a box moving. He looked to his left to see a box flipped upside down not even three fox-lengths away. Yoru quietly crept towards the box and gently lifted it up. Inside was the she-cat, cowering in fear as she looked up at him, her eyes glazed with fear.
"P-Please don't h-hurt me!" she stammered, scooting away from him.
"No, no, no, I would never think of that!" Yoru assured her. "I'm just here to help you!"
"W-Why should I trust you?" She tried to sound more confident, but her tone and that look in her eyes gave away her fright.
"Because I'm alone as well!" Yoru told her. "Please... I'm not here to hurt you... I promise..."
The she-cat looked at him for a few moments before hesitantly getting up onto all four paws. "Are you sure?" she asked quietly. Yoru smiled softly and nodded. The she-cat blinked a few times before nodding back.
"Okay," she decided. "I appreciate you coming to help me, it means a lot."
"No problem," Yoru said. He dipped his head and introduced himself. "My name's Yoru. Are you comfortable sharing yours?"
A spark of hesitance lit up in the she-cat's eyes, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared as she introduced herself, grinning softly. "Yes, I am. My name is Ryla. It's very nice to meet you, Yoru."
