The C.C.C.

A young woman walked out of the forest into a clearing. This was where she would have to make a stand. She inhaled the cold winter air, and felt the snow crunch lightly beneath her boots. She looked around her, and found her view obscured by trees. Fighting in these conditions would be undesirable. The hoof beats were getting louder. She hadn’t expected them to pursue her this far. She knew she couldn’t beat them all, she needed an advantage.

She drew into herself and called to her sadness. Her eye began to glow blue and the light bore her up. As the hoof beats stopped, several cries of fear erupted from the forest. Someone called to attention, and the cries died down. She counted to ten and released the horses. She would need that power to fight the men. She landed softly and planted her spear. She drew back the hood on the heavy cloak she was wearing, showing the skull strapped over half of her face, and a mess of brown hair. She untied the cloak and tossed it to the side, revealing a torn gray shirt, shorts, and a crimson compass rose tattooed on her left calf.

She hefted her spear as a man wearing heavy armor appeared from the woods. There’s only a few people who could move so silently wearing that, she thought, and I’d rather not fight any of them.

He raised a gloved hand and pointed as he spoke, “You’re under arrest for murder and treason against the province of Faralynn. I have come to bring you back, dead or alive, on the orders of the new King of Faralynn. I cannot guarantee much, but if you come quietly I will help you make your case.”

“Even with the help of the new ruler I wouldn’t escape execution, we both know that.”

“I thought that would be your answer,” He spoke as he pulled back his hand and drew a longsword, “Echo. Be on your guard.”

He raised his weapon and charged her. She sidestepped easily and stabbed at the chinks in his neck. His own weapon deflected the much lighter spear and he counterattacked, forcing her to dodge again.

I just can’t get the advantage, she thought as she stabbed and jumped back, he doesn’t have to worry about dodging, and it’s only a matter of time before I slip on this snow.

The two warriors stared each other down. Then suddenly the man in heavy armor grabbed a whistle from his belt and blew two quick, clear notes. She heard the twang of a bow, and turned just in time to see the archer in the tree. This is it, she thought, this is where I die. Time slowed to a lethargic pace, she watched the arrow move toward her chest.

When the arrow stopped she was thoroughly surprised, as was the man in armor. A wall of snow had gathered in front of the arrow and stopped its flight. A young boy burst from the woods and threw a stone knife at the man in armor, which glanced off his breastplate without leaving a scratch.

This shocked Echo back into action. She immediately swung her spear and clipped the man in armor on the helmet, ringing loud across the clearing. He flinched and ducked, giving Echo time to flee with the boy following close behind.

“Shoot them!” The man in armor yelled, and the twang of a bow accompanied an arrow flying toward them. The boy raised a hand and snow erupted from the ground into a snow drift, catching the arrow in midair. His dark hair was the last thing the man in armor saw as they fled.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Echo uses a Scythe in battle. But if it was beneficial to the plot that she used a spear, don't change it.
