Prologue
[a girl’s voice comes over the radio] Hey. I’m Billybobjoe. [static][a boy’s voice] Wait, no. Sam, stop being crazy! [static][Sam] FINE [static][a boy’s voice] Ok. I am Jack. This is Sam. [static][Sam] HIIIIIII! [static][Jack] She is my older sister, and little crazy. (Just shut up, Sam. Jeez.) If you are hearing this, you’re in trouble. (I SAID SHUT UP!) [static][Sam] For the record, I am not cra- HEY! [intense static][radio belches][Jack] I got her to shut up by breaking her radio on… Oh, don't worry about that. We are here to tell you to go to the coordinates 19°27'25.8"S, 29°49'05.3"E. Why you ask? Because we need you. [Mumbling is heard] Sam… he’s here… I know let’s… into the… because we need… the i- [insanely intense static]
Ok, that was weird. I got out of my bed and turned the radio off. I was starting to contemplate life a little. Ok, a lot. I got dressed in my normal clothes (nothing special, just putting on other pajamas.), and left my room.
I walked down the long hallway dotted with pictures past my sister’s room. I walked straight into the kitchen and made myself cereal. I checked the clock - 6:47 in the morning. Dad was waking up from sleeping on the couch, so apart from us, everyone was asleep. I decided not to tell him about the radio thing.
“Mornin’ Dad.” I walked over to the table with my cereal and began to chow down.
“Hey,” he said as though he had just woken up (heh, he did just wake up, haha). I saw him walk outside to get some fresh air, because he did like to do that. After just ten minutes I downed two bowls of Cheerios and went over to the computer to play ROBLOX. I started Void Tycoon, and the game crashed. I restarted it, and a flash of black lightning (I think that’s what it was.) came out of the computer straight at me. That’s all I remembered before I blacked out and woke up in a rundown car shop on the floor, in between a flaming car and a 1970s Ford Mustang. A girl with long blonde hair like mine and green eyes had her face uncomfortably close to mine, close enough that I could lick her nose if I stuck my tongue out.
“May I help you?” I said, trying to sit up. I was abruptly stopped by two guys with medical masks on. The older one looked like he stuck his finger in a light socket, and the other younger one looked like he just rolled out of bed.
“Rest,” the one that looked like Einstein said, pushing on my chest. He was stitching up a cut in my leg that was pretty big. He finished as I threw my tantrum.
“Agh! What are you doing?” I smashed my fist into the concrete floor and grit my teeth. I have no pain tolerance.
“REST!” The younger shaggy one shouted. I recognized it’s voice, but I couldn’t think, as it hurt to. “Christina, if you freak out, the blood will rush faster.”
“How do you know my name?” I leaned back, and suddenly the pain went away.
“I’m Jack. This is Sam, and my Uncle Derek. We see you got our message? You came to the exact coordinates.”
“Wait wait wait. I didn’t want to come here. I was playing a computer game and I passed out when a black thing zapped me. And… WHAT?” I SO wanted to freeze them and walk away.
“Ah, you don’t know. That must have been our Uncle’s doing. He gets impatient, so he summoned you here. And to think you were a diviner… though you could have been a theurgist. They can teleport, too.”
“A what now?” I saw a water bottle unopened next to me. I reached over, and Sam stopped me. “What is that?”
“Energy potion. Works especially well on thaumaturges,” Derek said. “Cause It’s just water and crushed sauerkraut.”
“Yum?”
“Is that supposed to make them fast?” Sam asked, the first peep she’s made while I was here. She had a face as if someone stole her puppy.
“Yep. With thaumaturges they run even faster,” Derek pondered, putting away his doctors tools. He looked exactly like my father. Then he started to mumble to himself. “Two each? That hasn’t happened in hundreds of years…”
“Hundreds of what? You guys are annoying! I ask a question and you answer it with a question and answer your own question with a magical term or whatever knick knack! And why do you look like my father?” I asked, almost in an outrage.
He sighed and cleared his throat. “Ok. So, there are seven Elements-”
“Seven whatnow?”
“Let me explain. There are four Order Elements. Thaumaturges control Ice. Pyromancers control fire, Diviners control Lightning, and Theurgists control plants, and can heal people and animals.
“There are also three Chaos Elements. Necromancers control the undead, Solarists control the sun and stars, and Expertemists control the void. And to why I look like your father, I am him. Hello Christina.” He paused for a moment, then said, “Alright, any questions?”
“AGAIN, a question with another questioning answer!” I shouted.
Chapter One: Explanations and an Almost Deadly Spell
Did I question his sanity? Yeah, I did. A lot. 12 years of him going off on some magic things every day? No wonder I don’t see him very often. He’s somewhere else! Wait, I didn’t explain who I was. I’m Christina Norman, 12 years old, 5’ 1”, 104 pounds, quirky and lazy, and I have a father who is an elemental magician. And if miss perfect and mister I-don’t-care-how-I-look think he’s their uncle, they are sadly mistaken. Aaaaand I was thinking aloud. Everyone’s looking at me. Going out of my thoughts now.
“Uh, did I say that out loud?” I sat down.
“Yes, you did,” my Dad said. “I better explain. Everyone, sit.” We all sat on the floor. He explained. “So, a million years ago, my hundred times great grandfather Henrik Norman discovered magic. He categorized the magicks by “elements.” Ice, Fire, Lightning, and Plant. Then, when he tried to study it, he went crazy. He started studying Chaos Elements. Void, Sun, and Undead. Follow so far?”
“Yes,” We all said.
“Good. He was a Chaos Magister. A Magister is a Master of two or more elements from the same group. Then came the line of Order Magisters. They fought to rid the world of his undead creatures. And eventually kill Henrik in the process.
“Then, one person came along. Your great great great grandmother Christina Norman was an Utos. A Master of at least one Chaos and one Order element. She was a Plant and Undead Utos. She was the only person ever to even hurt Henrik’s soul.
“Jack and Sam have multiple elements, too. Jack is a Diviner and an Expertemist. But, he isn’t a master of Divinity yet. So he’s only a Master. Sam is a theurgist, pyromancer, and solarist. She hasn’t mastered anything, so she doesn’t have a rank. But, she is very powerful. I am all chaos. Master of necromancy, period. Nothing else.
“Let’s review terms. Master: a person who knows all the possible spells in an Element. Magister: A master of two or more Elements in the same Group (Cannot have another element that isn’t in the other Element’s Group to be called a Magister). Utos: Master of at least one Chaos and Order Element. Make sense?”
“That was a mouthful. Never makes sense... Never will,” Sam muttered as she wwalked away.
“That was informative,” I chatted back. “AAAAAAAAND What the hell? HOW does this have ANYTHING to do with why I’m here and not playing video games?”
He sighed. “I will tell you. In time, Christina. In time.”
Dad led us to a 4 star hotel (compared to the entire town, I was calling it a four star.) and got us rooms. Me and dad were in room 667, Jack and Sam were in 666. I felt bad for them. But it still didn’t match my confusement.
“Dad?” I said, getting into my bed. It wasn’t 6:47 anymore. It was 9:34 at night.
“Yeah, Christina?”
“Are Jack and Sam really my cousins?”
He didn’t even hesitate. “My sister, Karol Cunner was an Utos. She mastered every element ever. When she tried to battle your hundred and one time great grandfather, she cast the spell that sent him into the void. When Christi-”
“She had my name.”
“Yes she did. I named you after her. When Christina Norman hurt Henrik’s Soul, it caused him to be less powerful. He started to age again. He is now at the physical age of 73. But my sister had Jack, Sam, and Brett. Brett died at birth, but altogether, her three children had all the elements. They are your cousins.
“But, when she cast the spell, she used her soul. She sacrificed herself in this very city to save billions of people around the world. But Henrik is made of void now. He will rise again. We are in Gweru, Zimbabwe, by the way.” He coughed and yawned. “Well, you better get some sleep. Good night.” he turned off the lights and immediately snored. I cuddled up into bed. I could not sleep. I kept having dreams about Christina Norman’s death. Dad never explained how she died.
I woke to the sound of fire blasting outside. I opened the hotel window to see Sam shooting fireballs at some black forcefield with Jack behind it. He seemed to be sweating. I looked down at myself and realized that my pajamas were gone. I had jeans and a plain white t-shirt. I shrugged and walked down to the back where Sam and Jack were.
The backyard of the Hotel was massive. About the size of two football fields side by side.
“Hey, Sam,” Jack grunted, putting down his forcefield and narrowly dodging a plethora of fireballs. “Wanna- Agh!” He diverolled away from a tunnel of fire hurtling at him. I was impressed he had such quick reflexes... until he rolled right into a rose bush.
“Oh!” I laughed, then helped him up. “Do I wanna what?”
“Duel. He wants to duel you.” Sam walked up behind me and smiled. “Though he always loses.”
“Shut up,” Jack blurted. “I’m a master of Void. You can’t summon a star to save your life.”
“Can to. And besides, three decent elements are better than a mastered one and a beginning one.”
“Fine, whatever.” Jack got up, waved a hand, and suddenly the ground formed into a soccer field-sized arena. I assumed I was fighting Sam, as Jack was climbing onto a rock on one side of the field. He started summoning scoreboards and what looked like two chestplates with wires running through it. Instinctively I got up and walked towards the closest side. Sam did as such too, but on the other side of the field.
“Here are the rules,” Jack almost shouted so we could hear him. “You can only use five different spells, and only one element. You can move anywhere on the field, but being in enemy territory will give you less points. Your points are judged by how hard you hit your opponent. The person with the most points wins after 5 minutes. Are you ready?”
“Yes,” Sam and I said in unison.
“Good.” We both got ready as we strapped on our chestplates. “Three, Two, One, Battle!”
A horn sounded, and Sam immediately started spewing fireballs. Then I realized - I didn’t know any spells. I tried to summon a lightning ball, but nothing. As I kept dodging and trying different spells (fireballs, vine whips, and even a few zombies) I finally realized. I tried summoning a wall of ice - and a massive wall of ice was made in front of me, just in time to block the flaming torpedo coming my way.
“Woah! Ice!” I shouted like it was the best day ever.
“Cool, but I have the advantage. Fire beats Ice!” Sam summoned another massive torpedo the size of my wall and threw it at me. I immediately shot out a blast of Ice so big I think it might’ve killed Sam. But the chestplate disintegrated it and I got 17 points.
“What?” How is that possible? A beginner can’t use Ice Beam! That’s a master spell! Heck, you need to be a master of Plant for it to be effective!” Sam rushed at me with her fist flaming, ready to punch me. But I dodged and used some sort of Ice Shard, that shot out tons of glass shards. Again, I think I might’ve killed her. Just then another horn sounded, and the match was over. The score was 32 to 28. I won.
