Student Safety. What was down there in that basement would cost us our own safety? That rang through my head like an unanswered telephone as school was coming to an end. I wanted to know what was down there, and I was very impatient. “Hey, do you know anything about the school’s creepy basement?” I asked my friend as he was doing his schoolwork. He was a grade A student, while I was a slacker. “I heard that there’s dead bodies down there,” He snorted. I huffed, knowing he was just trying to freak me out. “Ha ha very funny, Jesse.” He shook his head, “You could always check it out when the janitor gets here tonight, since I know how much you like breaking into buildings.” I growled, then a faint memory came to mind. A few years back, a kid went missing because he ventured off into the basement. We were sure that the school was going to shut down, but it strangely never did. I almost screamed when the school bell rang. Luckily it was a Friday.
I usually hated walking home, but I was excited for tonight. Once I stepped my foot into the house, I heard my drunken father yell for me. “Mallory! Come to the kitchen this instant!” I deeply sighed, and dropped my bookbag at the front door, before walking to the tiny kitchen we had. “What do you need, dad?” I asked ever-so-politely. He groaned, before throwing up into the sink, “Ge-Get me a t-towel, you punk.” I nodded, and gave him a dirty towel that was on the sink. Before he could demand me for anything else, I quickly walked out through the front door, with my backpack. It was about half an hour when I arrived at Jesse’s house. He had a beautiful white 2 story house, while I just lived in a filthy one story house that I usually had to tend to when my mother was away. I knocked a few times on the door, and Jesse quickly opened the door. I laughed, a hand on my belly, “Were you waiting for me?” He seemed embarrassed before mumbling, “N-No..anyways, we should get going after dinner.” I nodded, and walked into the house. We sat down in his room, and discussed how our plan was going to work. “You have the key you took from the janitor, right?” Jesse nodded, as he pulled out a silver key from his pocket. “Awesome!” I exclaimed. “Alright now we need to-” I paused when Jesse’s mom called us down for dinner. We hurried down, and ate our tuna noodle casserole in the quickest way possible. Soon as we were done, we thanked Jesse’s mother, whose name is Kristine, for dinner and ran back up to Jesse’s room. We went over our plan, and decided to use Jesse’s bedroom window, since it was facing the forest behind his house. Jesse had placed a ladder next to his window, which we used as our escape route. The ladder was like a snake when it wiggled around, but we got down.
I was excited, yet so nervous when we finally got to the school. “There’s the bush that hides the door,” I pointed to a shrub that was next to the back of the school. Now I realized why we always had recess in the front of the school, instead of the back. We held hands, which made us feel a tiny bit safer, and jogged to the bush. We moved some branches out of the way, and Jesse handed me the key, “Yo-You wanted to do this, s-so you should open the door.” He was trembling, and on the verge of crying. I really hated seeing my friend his way, but we wanted, no, we needed to see what was down there. “Look Jess, if there’s anything down there that’s dangerous, I promise to protect you, and if I can’t, run and never come back to school, okay?” I squeezed his hand and he nodded. “You’re the greatest friend I could ask for, Mal.” I smiled at his words, and unlocked the door. We opened the door, and slowly went down the cement stairs, into the dark basement. The musty smell filled our noses, and I turned on a flashlight I took my house before I left. Even when we were in the basement, the wind was still howling outside as if we were in the worst thunderstorm in ages. Jesse pointed to something in the corner of the room, so I instantly shined the light on it. It was just the mascot costume, which was a bear. The costume was holding something that gave off a weird, irony smell. Jesse grabbed a stick, and handed it to me. When I tried to move the bear’s arm, it was oddly heavy, like someone was still inside the costume itself. After a few slow minutes, I managed to move the arm, and I honestly wished I never did. There was another arm, it had been chopped off, and it had several bite marks in it. We both froze like statues when the costume slowly lifted it’s head, revealing caked blood all over its mouth. It had human-like eyes that were bulging out, and blood shot. The eyes slowly rolled back into its head and it let out a deafening scream. We ran up the stairs, and we could hear the costume getting up as well. Once we got up to the surface, we slammed the doors and locked them. Just to be safe, we piled on several huge rocks. “Wh-What was that?!” Jesse screamed, his eyes were like waterfalls now. “I don’t know! We need to get home and tell someone!” He nodded, and we ran off.
When we got to the house, Jesse’s parents were asleep. We used the ladder that was our escape route. Once we were in the house, we bolted to Jesse’s parents’ room and told them about what we saw. “M-Mom, Dad, I w-wanna move! And t-take Mallory with us!” Jesse seemed to beg. His dad sat up, adjusting his glasses, “Did you get any evidence?” We looked at each other, and shook our head. “If w-we stayed there any longer, we c-could’ve gotten killed,” I muttered, tears coming to my eyes.

if you think i should create more stories dealing with Mallory and Jesse, or just short stories in general, please tell me!
