My advice would be to make sure you don't compromise your own style to impress others. Keep your style visible throughout the pack, but don't be afraid to try new things and diversify your textures. Also, if you're going for an eye-pleasing visual pack, I'd recommend making sure the nature-ish blocks have nice, vibrant colors. Minecraft's leaf and grass textures (before the texture overhaul. Has that happened yet?) looked very dark and boring. Giving more life to those kinds of blocks would really spruce things up.
