among the weeds in your mom's backyard garden
(This was going to be my original submission to the Hallowe'en writing contest, but I went with the other one instead.)

Death Shall Not Conquer

Trudging down the dirt path,
Hoping not to encounter Death’s wrath,
Synchronized stepping with my friend,
Walking towards our end,
Death was always looming,
It’s bereavement call booming,
Hallowe’en did not scare me,
Nor my friend Lee,
Then Lee started running,
Death was being cunning,
Tricking us to run to our demise,
Death will have Its prize,
The squishing of the mud,
Man, this was no fun,
We came out at night,
To seek some fight or flight,
Now that I am here,
I don’t feel like dying this year,
It’s too early for me to go,
But this is only Death’s show,
I have no control over the situation,
“You made this happen!” came the false allegation,
“No, I didn’t!” I tried to say,
Although I’d surely pay,
I needed to get to safety,
If I wanted that I’d have to be hasty,
With a sudden burst of speed,
My friend began to bleed,
Lee had made the mistake of provoking Death,
With a gasp, Lee drew in his last breath,
The lesson here is not to be ungrateful,
Or you’ll find death quite painful,
Be glad you have life, dear friend,
Or you’ll meet the same sad end,
I did not have time to waste,
I had to keep my pace,
From Death, I ran,
To escape It’s evil plan,
As I kept running I saw a house,
I didn’t have time to browse,
If I wanted to keep my life,
And not be stabbed with Death’s bloody knife,
I dashed inside the house to find my mother,
We simply gazed at one another,
Death tried to break in,
But my mother’s love didn’t let him sin,
“Momma!” I cried,
As I began to walk over to her with a stride,
“Louise.” She said faintly,
Then she hugged me very quaintly,
“What lesson have you learned?”
“Not to provoke death and to go in your turn.”
A tear trickled down my face,
This really was a sorrowful place,
The Earth is corrupted,
Us humans have made it disrupted,
From this day on I set off,
On a journey and hope not to get lost,
To what do I hope to achieve?
To comfort those who grieve,
I hope to stop the sadness from Death,
Even my intrepid bully Seth,
Death will conquer no more,
Death will not gain any score,
Death will only rule again when I pass,
But my children will carry on alas.
