Here is the whole story (Grab your snacks :D)
Bukkit, originally made dinnerbone and grumm was small open source project. then a half year later mojang thought a plugin api was pretty cool so they hired the 4 main devs (they already hired dinnerbone and grumm) and bought bukkit. But becaues Bukkit was an open source project, what mojang did was illegal, they didn't tell anyone else except for the 4 devs they hired they bought bukkit. so basically mojang had people work on bukkit for them with no pay. (skip 2.5 years later) Mojang enforced there EULA, and the devs didn't like that so they tried to take down bukkit. Mojang stepped in and said that they didn't have the power to do that, dinnerbone stepped in and said he was gonna continue bukkit for 1.8 (happy ending right right?! WRONG) a giant contributor to bukkit "Wolverness" found that he was working for free, and he was working under a gpl license which states that anyone can use his code, but no one can claim it, so since mojang claimed it he town the bukkit project by legal actions. and since mojang secretly asked spigot for help Wolverness wasn't happy and took down spigot, so ya.

But not to fear Bukkit, spigot, and forge devs are working on a project called Sponge, which will be a fresh new plugin api that will avoid any dmca issues.

so basiclly bukkit's now done for?

news just arrived, Bukkit will NOT be continuing

Don't mind my nubness, but will it be the same? Like, will plugins work the same, or while the coding and stuffs be a whole new thing?
if spigot doesn't continue everyplugin will start from nothing

How? do you think if bukkit's not countinueing why would plugins work

My friend, novaldemar, made an announcement on this that I think might be useful here: (I did not write this)

This is probably the most serious issue for the continuation of the wider Minecraft Server community.

For those of you who don't know we use a Bukkit mod called Spigot to run our servers. Thus it is very concerning to see that a Craft Bukkit developer Wesley Wolfe (Wolvereness) issued a DMCA request for Spigots code alleging copyright violations. This has effectively halted distribution of the Spigot and Bukkit Project and is a serious concern to the entire Minecraft Community.

This is a very serious issue and may very well mean the end of server networks for good if Bukkit no longer is available.

I can easily attest that running this network would not be possible without Spigot or the great work done by md_5. The fixes Spigot makes over Craft Bukkit are essential to a server running smoothly as numbers of players increase. That is not to mention the fact that md_5 and co. have been extremely helpful and supportive via IRC with what ever issue I ran into while messing around on the server.

There is a discussion about a new Bukkit/Spigot project replacement called Sponge

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VJ1WzHI-VUuoHEJz4SRHUbl-5XnsURbqP5fIi8B4Kyg/preview?sle=true

However there is very little information currently about it. Development time will probably be longer than we normally expect between Minecraft cycles and the extent to which existing plugins like Towny, McMMO ect, will be compatible is not known. It seems very likely that these plugins would need to be rewritten completely if the API is changing.

Servers that use Bukkit were sometimes a motivation to buy Minecraft. As Bukkit is no longer being updated, new servers will face problems and the effect of this is quite significant. The only benefit I see here is the avoidance of a lawsuit.

SpongePowered will take a good few months to be anywhere near ready. When it is, all plugins will have to be completely rewrote to work with it. So, it seems like we'll be on a 1.8 patch for a while...

the server has their own version of bukkit so there is nothing to worry about
