Hello, everyone, and welcome back to BITTEN!
I hope you all enjoyed the last episode. I'd like to remind you all that the previous episodes are still here, so if you're new to the story or just want to reread them, you can find the links below (and they'll always be in my signature).
Thanks for your patience on the previous episode and this one. As for the next episode, I hope to write it next week. I've been thinking a lot about the direction for this story - when I started, I only had a basic idea, and now I've got a better vision for the plot. I hope you all will stick with me and enjoy the story for what it is!

-/- Episode 5: Southern Relations -\-
"It'll take about six hours to get there," Samuel whispered over his shoulder. "so we'll be there by one o'clock."
Rose nodded and returned to the chair across from the couch upon which Lily lay fast asleep. She observed that her younger sister's chest rose very slowly as if she were barely breathing.
Rose sat in the soft chair, closed her eyes, and attempted to prepare her mind for the upcoming events. She had discussed the travel plans with her parents before the family left home; they would be driving south to a nicer town to try to get away from the attacks.
Even though Rose was approaching the age of seventeen, she still had nightmares every once in a while. She soon regretted taking a few minutes to sleep; she awoke, trembling in a cold sweat. Doing her best to take her mind off the matter, Rose glanced about to see Lily awake, sitting on the couch across from her.
"Nightmare?" she inquired. Her pigtails swung back as she tipped her head forward to see Rose's answer. Rose observed that Lily seemed fully awake; she lacked bags under her eyes, and she had already moved her sleeping bag out of the way.
"Yeah, but it's okay," Rose assured her sister, "I'm fine now. How long have you been awake?"
"Not long," replied Lily. "Where are we going?"
Rose sighed. "We're going south to visit Grandma and Grandpa Lupus. Mom and Dad say it'll be safer down there, and we'll be able to spend some time with Grandma and Grandpa. We haven't gone to visit them in a while."
"When will we get there?" chimed Lily, an excited smile flooding her face. "I want to see them! I want to see them soon! When will we get there, Rose?"
"Calm down, Lily," laughed Rose as she rubbed her eyes. "We'll be there around one in the afternoon. It'll be time to see them before you know it."
Lily dug through her backpack, obviously realizing that she was not the one to fill it. Rose supposed Lily was figuring out why she woke up in the camper: the family had packed before Lily woke up and brought everything into the vehicle so they could leave at a good time.
"I didn't know we had a camper," Lily said curiously as she pulled a coloring book out of her pink backpack. "When did we get it?"
"Remember that guy from the supermarket yesterday? Mr. Walker?"
"Yeah. Did he give it to us?"
Rose smiled. "Yes, he did. He was kind enough to give it to us after what Dad did for him yesterday. I'm very thankful; we probably wouldn't have been able to come down here this easily otherwise. We're bringing a lot of supplies with us that wouldn't fit in the old heap of metal at home."
Lily nodded, but she was already so focused on her coloring book that she seemed to be in her own world. Rose took this as an opportunity to stretch and use the bathroom. As she stood, she began to lose her balance due to the motion of the vehicle, but she soon regained it and proceeded to the toilet.
Upon returning, Rose sat and observed the world outside her window. Trees and fields passed her field of vision quickly, and she could only see street signs for a mere second.
The speedy vehicle passed by small towns, but most of the area around was merely fields and woods. The few towns that they passed through were also still and quiet. Everyone seemed to know what was going on in the area, and no one wanted to put themselves in danger by doing a simple outside task such as taking out the trash or cleaning up the yard.
With every hour that passed, Rose could tell that the situation and general attitude of the surrounding area became less reserved and afraid. Houses began to have garage doors open, children outside and pets roaming the yards. Rose assumed necessary precautions were still being taken, but she was assured by the positive appearance of these places.
When Rose checked the clock to see that it read noon, she found herself hungry. She offered to make sandwiches for Lily and her mother. After doing so, and enjoying the lunch greatly, she retired to her couch again to gaze at the area outside.
Knowing well that her grandparents did not live in a city, it was no surprise when the family passed through a small area of a neighboring city. Samuel explained that it would be safer to stick to the outside suburbs as much as possible, and Rose subconsciously agreed.
The large camper slowly pulled into the wide driveway of the small house, and Samuel promptly shut off the engine. Elizabeth announced that it was time to exit the vehicle, and the family quickly gathered their things and cleaned up the place within a few seconds.
Elizabeth exited first, followed by Lily and Rose. Samuel went ahead of them and rang the doorbell of the small house. After a few moments, some noises could be heard from the inside, and soon the front door opened a bit. A short old woman poked her head around the door, and her face was immediately flooded with glad emotions.
"Oh, Samuel! So good to see you - oh, and the whole family's here too! Why don't you all come inside? Quickly, now, Grandpa's waiting."
"It'll take about six hours to get there," Samuel whispered over his shoulder. "so we'll be there by one o'clock."

Rose pulled her hair into a bun as she grew more excited to see her beloved grandparents. She could see their small house approaching, and she could tell Lily was more excited than ever.
