There's a lot more to the desert than the thick sands and the scorching heat. The desert is in flames during the day and cold as ice at night. One would wish to be careful and well supplied, lest they suffer under the burning Sun and decay after death into the deep, sandy hills.
I grew up in the land of Ahraq. I never knew much about my life before the age of 8, when I was adopted by an old couple. Working near the mines, shoving coal into the furnace with coal dust all on my ragged clothes, an old man spotted me and whisked me away from the mine owner and the place where I worked everyday and coughed everyday.
This old man and his wife took me in as their adopted son.
During this time, I met Siin—the youngest camel they owned. I'd feed her an assortment of nuts and dates every night. Eventually, I learned how to ride a camel for myself.
They both died some years after that. They both died together. It was so sudden that I was left with nothing. Nothing but Siin, my clothes and my money.
For years I'd been trading and exchanging. Delivering and receiving. Working and moving.
It wasn't until that one day–when everything changed.
My name is Safr.
And this is my story.
