I'm now trying to figure out the etymology of these two words and it's messing me up.
The De- prefix means something along the lines of down or under.
-Moted and -Voted though.
I can see it with -Moted but now ithe -Voted.

Okay so demote is an altered version of promote.
pro- meaning forward and -mote meaning to move
De- means down.
so Demote means to move downward.

devot- means 'consecrated'.
and -vote means 'to vow'.
It pretty much means vowed to formally consecrate.
